Brief Description

This is a non-supervisory position. Duties include assisting library patrons and performing various clerical functions in the Library.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply business English, spelling, and grammar
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and relate well with coworkers and patrons
  • Knowledge of public library operations or the willingness to learn library policies, procedures, and other processes specific to the library
  • Ability to finish assignments and projects in the allotted time frame
  • Ability to work with varying ages and backgrounds
  • Ability to learn and apply search strategies and techniques for searching and locating materials via the Internet and other online databases
  • Ability to assist the public in computer instruction and assistance
  • Ability to manage change and maintain flexibility performing a variety of functions.
  • Ability to use needed judgment in situations that may not fall within a specified policy or procedure
  • Ability to operate needed software programs used within the library
  • Ability to assist with all phases of circulation, including assisting patrons
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to re-shelve materials in library stacks using book trucks and step stools as needed
  • Ability to operate all machinery related to job duties

Education and Experience

High school degree or one (1) year of library experience. Customer service experience desired. Experience with cash handling; OR

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certificates and Licenses Required

A Valid Class C Texas driver's license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Environmental Factors and Safety Hazards

Primarily in an indoor environment with the ability to operate outdoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during the summer and winter months.

Tools and Equipment Used

Standard office equipment, including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, shredder, printer, etc.
