Job description

About the Role:

We are seeking a motivated Workers' Compensation Defense Associate to join our growing litigation team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a varied caseload that includes defending employers, self-insured entities, and insurance carriers across all phases of workers' compensation proceedings. Associates work side-by-side with senior partners and lead attorneys from day one: handling case intake and evaluation, engaging in discovery, preparing legal memoranda, and appearing before the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB). We foster a collaborative environment where every team member's contributions are valued and professional excellence is rewarded.

Flexible Work Arrangement:

We recognize that exceptional legal work can happen anywhere. Associates enjoy a hybrid schedule with remote work available during the week. Our secure technology platform ensures seamless access to case management systems, client communications, and firm resources from any location.

Key Responsibilities

•      Manage and litigate a caseload of workers' compensation defense matters from inception through resolution.

•      Conduct thorough case evaluations, draft pleadings, and propound and respond to discovery.

•      Appear before the WCAB at hearings, mandatory settlement conferences, and trials.

•      Communicate proactively with clients, adjusters, and medical providers throughout litigation.

•      Prepare comprehensive legal research memoranda and coverage opinions.

•      Collaborate with firm partners and co-counsel on complex, high-exposure matters.

•      Maintain meticulous case records and manage deadlines in a fast-paced litigation environment.

Professional Development:

We invest in our people. Through our Associates Academy program, you will receive mentorship from our experienced ABOTA-certified trial attorneys, participate in structured CLE programming, and gain real courtroom and hearing-room experience early in your career. Associates are given genuine opportunities to mediate, arbitrate, and try cases - not just observe. We are committed to developing well-rounded litigators who are prepared to advance within the firm.

Requirements:

•      Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

•      Active membership in the California State Bar in good standing.

•      One (1) or more years of workers' compensation or employment-related litigation experience preferred; recent law graduates with demonstrated interest will be considered.

•      Exceptional legal research and writing skills, with rigorous attention to detail.

•      Strong advocacy, negotiation, and oral communication skills.

•      Ability to independently manage a high-volume caseload while meeting strict deadlines.

•      Proficiency with case management software and standard legal research platforms (Westlaw/Lexis).

Compensation & Benefits:

•      Salary Range: $120,000–$180,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

•      Performance-based annual bonus program.

•      Comprehensive benefits package.

•      401(k) retirement plan.

•      Employee referral bonus program.

•      A collegial firm culture that values work-life balance and long-term career advancement.

All applications will be held in strict confidence. Hartwell & Stone LLP is an equal opportunity employer.
