What is a Legal Writing Professor job?
A Legal Writing Professor teaches law students essential skills in legal analysis, research, and writing. They design and deliver courses focused on drafting legal documents, such as memos, briefs, and motions, while emphasizing clarity, precision, and persuasive argumentation. These professors often provide detailed feedback on student work and may also conduct legal writing workshops or contribute to scholarship in the field. Many hold law degrees and have prior experience in legal practice. Their goal is to prepare students for effective communication in legal settings.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Legal Writing Professor position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Legal Writing Professor, you generally need a Juris Doctor (JD), experience in legal practice or legal writing, and a strong grasp of legal research and writing pedagogy. Familiarity with digital teaching platforms, citation management software (like The Bluebook), and learning management systems (LMS) is commonly expected. Outstanding communication, mentorship, and organizational skills set exceptional candidates apart in this academic environment. These capabilities are crucial for effectively instructing students, guiding them to develop practical legal writing abilities, and maintaining high pedagogical standards.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Legal Writing Professor?
As a Legal Writing Professor, your daily responsibilities often include preparing and delivering lectures or workshops on legal writing, designing assignments and assessments, and providing detailed feedback on student work. You are also likely to hold office hours for one-on-one student meetings, participate in curriculum development, and collaborate with fellow faculty to ensure consistency and rigor in the legal writing program. Additionally, you may engage in professional development, attend faculty meetings, and serve on academic committees, all of which contribute to a dynamic and collaborative academic work environment.

Job Summary
Visiting Legal Writing Faculty for Fall 2026 & Spring 2027
The J. David Rosenberg College of Law at the University of Kentucky seeks to hire a full-time, nine-month, visiting faculty member to teach in our first-year legal research and writing (LRW) program during the 2026-2027 academic year. The program involves a two-semester curriculum, with two credits per semester, which covers the fundamentals of legal research, legal analysis, legal writing, and legal citation. The fall course focuses on predictive writing, and the spring course focuses on persuasive writing with a brief introduction to oral advocacy. Students retain the same professor for both semesters.
The successful candidate will teach two sections of the first-year LRW courses. Typical section size ranges from 18 to 22 students. The visiting faculty member will work collaboratively with other full-time faculty involved in the LRW, including a library faculty liaison who teaches the legal research component of the courses, and the LRW program's director. In addition to teaching, the visiting faculty member will maintain regular office hours, evaluate student assignments, and hold individual conferences.
Interested candidates must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, strong analytical and rhetorical skills, and legal-practice experience that demonstrates the potential for excellence in teaching legal writing and other lawyering skills. Previous experience teaching legal writing is strongly preferred.
Salary will be $90,000.
