What is a Legal Program Manager?

A Legal Program Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating legal projects and initiatives within an organization. They work closely with legal teams, stakeholders, and other departments to ensure that legal programs are executed efficiently, comply with regulations, and meet organizational goals. Their duties often include managing timelines, budgets, resources, and communication, as well as implementing processes to improve legal operations. Legal Program Managers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between legal and business functions, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Legal Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Program Manager, you need expertise in legal project management, compliance, and risk assessment, often supported by a law degree or relevant certification (such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma). Familiarity with legal management software, contract management systems, and workflow automation tools is typically required. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills enable effective collaboration across legal and business teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring legal projects are executed efficiently, within scope, and in compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by Legal Program Managers in cross-functional projects?

Legal Program Managers often work on projects that require coordination between legal, compliance, business, and technical teams. A key challenge is translating complex legal requirements into actionable steps for non-legal stakeholders while ensuring deadlines and regulatory standards are met. Balancing multiple priorities, managing stakeholder expectations, and adapting to changing regulations are also common hurdles. Strong communication and project management skills are essential to navigate these complexities and drive successful outcomes.

About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Project Manager to join Uber's Core Tech Legal team. • Design, implement, and continuously improve processes, tools, playbooks, and systems that enable efficient legal reviews, streamlined approval workflows, and scalable team operations.
  • Serve as a front-line reviewer, working under the supervision of an attorney, to handle the review, drafting, and negotiating of a wide variety of business proposals and commercial agreements.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with various global legal, policy, and cross-functional teams and act as a key liaison to drive alignment, resolve blockers, and ensure appropriate visibility.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in legal program management or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • The ability to juggle multiple projects at a time in an exciting, fast-paced environment, both collaborating as a team to stay in sync and working independently to get the job done.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and highly collaborative with both business leaders and cross-functional partners, with a strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others.
  • Strong judgment with ability to act autonomously and know when to seek input or escalate.
  • Experience negotiating commercial agreements is a bonus!
  • Experience using AI/ML tools and methodologies, with demonstrated understanding of related legal, regulatory, and ethical considerations.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and a track record of building new or improving existing programs or processes.
  • Capacity to learn and retain technical and legal information, ask insightful questions, and translate complex details into actionable guidance.
  • Self-motivation with a strong affinity for vision setting, strategic problem solving, and driving action.
  • Inquisitive, proactive, and able to spot issues and drive them to resolution.
