As of Jun 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for leasing agent property management in the United States is $18.52, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges Leasing Agents face when managing multiple properties, and how can they effectively handle them?

Leasing Agents in property management often juggle responsibilities across several properties, which can lead to challenges such as scheduling conflicts, maintaining consistent communication with tenants, and staying organized with documentation. To handle these effectively, agents typically rely on property management software to track leads, lease agreements, and maintenance requests. Strong time management and proactive communication with both property owners and tenants are essential for ensuring that no tasks fall through the cracks. Building good relationships with maintenance teams and staying updated on each property's status also helps streamline operations and improve tenant satisfaction.

What is the difference between Leasing Agent Property Management vs Leasing Coordinator?

AspectLeasing Agent Property ManagementLeasing Coordinator
CredentialsReal estate license often requiredTypically no license required
Work EnvironmentOn-site at properties, interacting with prospective tenantsOffice-based, coordinating leasing activities
Employer & IndustryProperty management companies, real estate firmsReal estate agencies, property management firms

Leasing Agent Property Management and Leasing Coordinator roles both involve leasing activities, but Leasing Agents focus on showing properties and securing tenants, often requiring a real estate license. Leasing Coordinators handle administrative tasks and coordinate leasing processes, usually without licensing requirements. Both roles are essential in property leasing but differ in responsibilities and work environment.

How much do leasing agents make per lease?

Leasing agents in property management typically earn a commission ranging from 25% to 50% of the first month's rent for each lease they secure. Some may also receive a flat fee or a combination of base salary and commission, depending on the employer and location. Compensation can vary based on experience, property type, and market conditions.

Is a leasing agent the same as a property manager?

A leasing agent is responsible for showing rental properties, processing applications, and securing tenants, while a property manager oversees the entire property operations, including maintenance, rent collection, and tenant relations. Although their roles overlap, property managers typically have broader responsibilities and may supervise leasing agents. Both roles often require knowledge of local laws and good communication skills.

What does a Leasing Agent in Property Management do?

A Leasing Agent in Property Management is responsible for finding and securing tenants for rental properties. They market available units, conduct property tours, screen potential renters, and assist with lease agreements. Additionally, leasing agents often handle tenant inquiries, coordinate move-ins, and ensure that properties are presented in the best possible condition to prospective renters.

Is being a leasing agent worth it?

A leasing agent in property management typically earns a salary or commission and is responsible for showing properties, screening tenants, and managing lease agreements. The role offers opportunities for customer service, sales skills, and experience in real estate, with work schedules often including weekends and evenings. Job satisfaction depends on individual preferences for interaction and sales targets.

Where do leasing agents make the most money?

Leasing agents tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a high cost of living and competitive real estate markets, such as major metropolitan areas. Income can also increase with experience, certifications, and the size or type of property portfolio managed. However, overall earnings are influenced more by local market conditions than by specific locations alone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Leasing Agent in Property Management, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Leasing Agent in Property Management, you need strong sales abilities, knowledge of real estate practices, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent (some positions may require a real estate license). Familiarity with property management software (such as Yardi or AppFolio), CRM systems, and digital marketing tools is highly valuable. Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer service skills set top performers apart in this role. These combined skills ensure effective tenant acquisition, retention, and smooth property operations in a competitive rental market.
