Accounting Manager

Location: Hybrid (2 days in office – Herndon, VA)

Role Overview

The Accounting Manager oversees day-to-day accounting operations with a primary focus on accounts payable, while supporting month-end closing and financial reporting. This role ensures accurate, complete, and timely recording of transactions and the general ledger, including reconciliations, accruals, and related analyses. The position partners with cross-functional teams to strengthen internal controls, maintain compliance with applicable requirements, and support audits and statutory filings. You will also lead process improvements and automation initiatives, bringing both hands-on execution and functional leadership to scale the finance organization.

The Role: Impact & Responsibilities

This position is designed for a high-impact professional who enjoys a 70% technical execution and 30% functional leadership split.

Accounting Operations, Financial Reporting & Close

  • Operational Oversight: Lead the charge in ensuring the total accuracy and completeness of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the general ledger.
  • The Close: Responsible for the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring we hit our deadlines with precision.
  • Reconciliations: Maintain high standards for timely and accurate account reconciliations.
  • Budgeting & Analysis: Support budgeting activities and provide meaningful explanations behind the numbers through period-over-period and budget variance analysis for executive leadership.

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Regulatory Liaison: Manage statutory reporting and compliance, including business licenses, income/property/sales tax, and other regulatory filings.
  • Standards Expert: Ensure 100% compliance with the latest accounting standards and internal controls.
  • Policy Management: Build and maintain robust accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Audit Management: Serve as the primary liaison for external audits, coordinating and fulfilling all requirements to ensure a smooth process.

Functional & Change Leadership

  • Process Transformation: Identify and implement process improvements and automation to increase efficiency.
  • Project Management: Serve as a subject matter expert and lead on accounting-related projects, providing guidance and mentorship to staff across the department.
  • Growth Potential: Assist with workflow optimization and internal training, positioning yourself as a key leader for future departmental expansion and potential direct-report management.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required
  • 6+ years of accounting experience with a clear track record of career progression is required.
  • Experience in team leadership, project management, or mentoring (2+ years preferred).
  • Deep understanding of GAAP; experience with ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition) and Stock Compensation.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Oracle, SAP) and an advanced mastery of Excel.
  • Expert time and task management with the communication skills necessary to clearly provide applicable context and answers to leadership.
  • CPA, CMA, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience in Public Accounting or a Professional Services environment.
  • Exposure to SOX or internal audit environments; knowledge of IFRS would be preferred.
  • Experience with databases and querying (SQL) is preferred.
  • Experience working within a multinational company structure would be preferred.
