What is learning experience design?

Learning Experience Design (LXD) is an approach that focuses on creating engaging, effective, and learner-centered educational experiences. Unlike traditional instructional design, LXD considers the entire journey of the learner, including motivation, context, and usability. Learning Experience Designers use principles from education, psychology, and design to craft courses, programs, or digital tools that promote meaningful learning outcomes. Their work often involves collaboration with subject matter experts, educators, and technologists to ensure learning solutions are both effective and enjoyable.

What are some common challenges faced by learning experience designers when collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs)?

Learning Experience Designers often work closely with subject matter experts to create effective educational content. A common challenge is translating complex or technical information from SMEs into engaging and accessible learning materials for diverse audiences. There can also be differences in expectations or communication styles, requiring strong interpersonal and project management skills to align goals and timelines. Building mutual understanding and maintaining clear, ongoing communication are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a successful collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a learning experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Experience Designer, you need expertise in instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and often a degree in education, instructional design, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and multimedia production is essential. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help you design engaging, learner-centered experiences that address diverse needs. These skills are vital to creating effective and impactful educational solutions that drive learner engagement and knowledge retention.

What is the difference between Learning Experience Design vs Instructional Design?

Learning Experience Design focuses on creating engaging, learner-centered experiences using design and user experience principles, often in digital environments. Instructional Design emphasizes developing structured educational content and courses, typically with a focus on curriculum and assessment. While both roles overlap in education and training, Learning Experience Design prioritizes the overall learner journey and engagement, whereas Instructional Design concentrates on content structure and delivery.

Job description

Toddler Teacher
The Learning Experience Longwood | Full-Time
Do you love this age the curiosity, the wobbly first steps into independence, the mess, the little breakthroughs that feel huge? We're looking for a toddler teacher who's genuinely excited to be part of it all. You'll design hands-on lessons, guide early social and emotional growth, and help our littlest learners build the foundation for a lifetime of curiosity.
What You'll Do

  • Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate activities rooted in play-based learning
  • Create a safe, warm classroom where toddlers feel secure enough to explore and try new things
  • Nurture social skills and emotional growth through everyday moments and interactions
  • Track developmental milestones and keep families in the loop with updates that matter
  • Partner with fellow teachers to swap ideas and strengthen our curriculum together
  • Keep your classroom clean, organized, and inviting a space toddlers love walking into
What You Bring

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience with toddlers in an early childhood setting
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • A solid understanding of child development principles
  • Clear, friendly communication with children, families, and teammates alike
  • Patience, flexibility, and genuine enthusiasm for the beautiful chaos of the toddler years
Why You'll Love It Here

At The Learning Experience Longwood, we invest in our teachers through ongoing professional development, a collaborative and supportive team culture, and real opportunities to grow your career. Come do meaningful work alongside people who love this age as much as you do.
