Job description

Consumers Energy is Michigan's largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).
General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Instructional Designer is responsible for analyzing the audience, content, technologies, operational constraints and trade-offs when applying adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies across multiple organizational boundaries and levels. The Instructional Designer will be responsible for development of learning using all delivery mediums to support technology and process changes being implemented by the IT Organization. The Instructional Designer will build out learning courses including instructor led, virtual and e-learning, and will have the ability to create courses from scratch, as well as customize existing ones. This role will liaison with internal Learning Development &Technology resources and external training vendors based on initiative requirements. This position requires strong project management skills in a fast-paced environment with a proficiency and experience with designing and developing innovative, interactive learning courses for a variety of content areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop the strategy that translates into well-designed course materials consistent with Consumers Energy design procedures, standard work and standards including the integration of images, fonts and other graphic elements.
  • Communicate with clients and peers to assess performance needs and determine the appropriate training curriculum and format.
  • Manage development of all training deliverables, including videos, participant manuals, facilitator guides, slide decks, e-learning modules, and job aids/tools after selecting the most effective training methodology to meet the desired objectives.
  • Manage multiple efforts simultaneously by incorporating work items into larger program delivery plans using standard IT tools (e.g., Azure DevOps) and communicating with co-workers and business partners to ensure interim deadlines are met and training efforts remain on track
  • Measure effectiveness by regularly evaluating successes, opportunities and risk, as well as incorporating feedback/lessons learned for continual improvement*
  • Coordinate with LD&T to load courseware and documentation to the Learning Management System (SAP Success Factors/Workforce Connect), interlinking content to internal and external content as needed
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends related to learning and development design and delivery, including mobile and social learning.
  • Well-developed writing, research, and editing skills; familiarity with standard style guides.
  • Strong consultative skills; the ability to successfully interact with clients to assess needs and develop appropriate training solutions.
  • Knowledge and/or familiarity with adult learning principles, and the ability to apply instructional design principles to training development.
  • Competency building courses in e-learning software.
  • Technology Competency; Uses a variety of software tools day-to-day including Office 365, SharePoint Online and Microsoft Teams and enjoys learning new technologies and tools to better understand training needs
  • Comprehensive understanding of the instructional design and development process (ADDIE, Bloom''s Taxonomy, etc.

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Adult Learning or Equivalent and 2+ years of experience in assessing performance gaps, analyzing learning needs, designing and developing learning and performance support solutions, and evaluating program effectiveness.

Preferred
End-to-end video production capability - Ability to plan (script, storyboard, shot list), shoot (camera, lighting, audio), and deliver high-quality training videos independently.
Strong post-production skills - Proficient in editing (cutting, trimming, syncing audio), enhancing visuals with graphics/animations, and optimizing content for learning effectiveness in tools like Adobe Premiere, or similar.
Learning-focused video design - Ability to translate instructional goals into clear, engaging video content that supports comprehension, retention, and real-world application.
