REPORTS TO: Building Principal
DEFINITION: Under close supervision, assists Teachers with the delivery and education curriculum, and provides assistance to students for Somerton School District No. 11.
NOTE: Our Instructional Assistant application is open to all schools and while we may not have an immediate opening, we appreciate your submission for future needs. The applicant's information is placed into a "pool," this means no employment process will begin until a need exists. Principals and Directors access the applicant pool as needed to hire assistants. The applicant's information will be kept on file for one year. Should the applicant want to update their materials after one year; a new and updated application will be required at that time.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class).
TASKS:
Assists teachers with children in classroom settings; works with students in one-on-one or small group settings to facilitate learning; modifies lessons to accommodate child's needs such as English-Spanish translation, and individualized instruction, prepares class materials for upcoming projects and activities; aids Teachers in thematic units; utilizes District behavior modification program as needed.
Assists Teacher with special needs children including bilingual, culturally diverse, resource, preschool, and special education; modifies or assists in modifying lesson plans to individual student needs; implements each child's Individual Education Plan (IEP); works with Teachers to overcome student barriers to learning; observes students' development; tests students; prepares documentation on student progress; organizes materials/activities to meet specific needs of each child; consults and collaborates with classroom teacher on progress of students.
Assists Teachers with classroom duties by making copies, filing paperwork, working with students; monitors and supervises students in classroom, playground and cafeteria settings; prepares instructional materials, making visual aids, and photocopying; prepares workstations or learning centers for children to work on daily lessons; and performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of early childhood learning methods and techniques.
Knowledge of special education or special needs accommodations.
Knowledge of District policies and procedures affecting assigned work.
Knowledge of District behavior modification program.
Skill in monitoring and assisting students.
Skill in working with special education and special needs students.
Skill in effective oral and written communication.
Skill in following oral and written instructions.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. Work requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Some positions may require bending and lifting up to 25 pounds. May be exposed to infectious diseases.
QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's Degree or able to pass paraprofessional exam and one (1) year childcare or classroom assistance experience. Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP) required at the time of hiring.
