Job description

Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran School and Learning Center is seeking an Assistant Teacher, Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 6:00pm, part time or full time to work with our two-year old class. We are seeking individual(s) that is/are mature enough to direct the children yet childlike enough to actively engage with them. In this role you will assist with the planning and presentation of age-appropriate activities for children. Opportunity for growth.

The children in this classroom are being potty trained, accidents do happen. You will be expected to show patience and encouragement as the children learn and gain confidence in this important life skill.

Hours: 9am - 6pm, Monday - Friday

PTO and company paid basic life insurance, short term/long term disability after 30 days. Company paid retirement contribution after 1-year. Medical, dental, vision available for full time after 1 month.

Responsibilities of an Assistant Preschool Teacher:

1. Support Teaching and Learning:

  • Assist with implementing lesson plans created by the lead teacher.
  • Engage with children during activities, play, story time, and learning centers.
  • Reinforce learning objectives through small group or one-on-one support.

2. Supervision and Safety:

  • Help monitor children to ensure safety indoors and outdoors.
  • Actively engage with the children.
  • Assist with headcounts, transitions, and bathroom breaks.
  • Report any injuries, behavioral concerns, or unusual incidents to the lead teacher.

3. Classroom Management:

  • Help maintain classroom order and routine.
  • Model and encourage appropriate behavior and social skills.
  • Gently redirect children when needed and support positive discipline techniques.

4. Daily Caregiving Tasks:

  • Help with meals, snacks, handwashing, and diapering or toileting.
  • Support children in dressing, cleaning up, and following routines.
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment.

5. Communication and Teamwork:

  • Communicate effectively with the lead teacher and other staff.
  • Maintain professionalism when speaking with parents (leave educational updates to the lead teacher unless directed).
  • Participate in team meetings and training courses as required.

6. Classroom Maintenance:

  • Clean and sanitize toys, tables, and materials.
  • Help set up and take down activities.
  • Assist in decorating and updating bulletin boards or displays.

7. Professional Development:

  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Work toward meeting any state-required coursework or certifications (e.g., 45 DCF hours in Florida).

Requirement

DCF 45-hour certification strongly preferred. High school diploma or GED a must. Must have previous experience, minimum 1-year, working in childcare environment. CPR certification a plus. Christian faith background preferred as you will be reinforcing Christ in the classroom.
