Job Summary
The Assistant Principal assists the Building Principal in providing instructional leadership, managing school operations, supporting student achievement, and fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment. The Assistant Principal works collaboratively with staff, students, families, and community partners to support the district's mission, vision, and strategic goals.
This position supports the implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, student services, and school improvement initiatives while promoting high expectations for student learning and behavior.
Essential Duties and Specific Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
- Assist in the implementation and monitoring of curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs.
- Support school improvement planning and implementation.
- Monitor student achievement data and assist in developing intervention strategies.
- Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback to teachers to improve instructional practices.
- Support the implementation of Illinois Learning Standards and district curriculum initiatives.
- Assist with professional development activities and instructional coaching.
Student Services and School Climate
- Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
- Support implementation of MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, and social-emotional learning initiatives.
- Address student discipline matters and promote positive student behavior.
- Monitor attendance and implement interventions to improve student engagement.
- Participate in IEP, 504, MTSS, and student support meetings as needed.
- Support crisis response, safety procedures, and emergency preparedness efforts.
Staff Supervision and Development
- Assist with supervision and evaluation of certified and non-certified staff.
- Support staff recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and retention efforts.
- Promote collaboration among teachers, support staff, and administrators.
- Assist in facilitating professional learning communities (PLCs) and team meetings.
- Encourage continuous professional growth and improvement.
School Operations
- Assist with daily building operations and supervision of school activities.
- Coordinate student arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and special events.
- Assist with scheduling, testing coordination, and school-wide activities.
- Ensure compliance with district policies, state regulations, and federal requirements.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as required.
- Serve as acting principal in the absence of the Building Principal.
Family and Community Engagement
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and community stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively regarding student progress, school programs, and district initiatives.
- Support parent engagement activities and community partnerships.
- Promote a welcoming and inclusive school culture.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Superintendent.
Minimum Education, Certification, and Licensure
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) required.
- Illinois Principal Endorsement required.
- Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or related field required.
Professional Experience and Skills
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience required.
- Prior leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and school improvement processes.
- Experience supporting MTSS, PBIS, SEL, and student support initiatives.
- Knowledge of Illinois School Code, ISBE requirements, and educational best practices.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze data and use information to improve student outcomes.
