What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Learning Analytics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Learning Analytics, you need strong analytical skills, experience with data analysis, and a background in educational research or instructional design, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS), statistical tools like R or Python, and certifications in data analytics are commonly expected. Excellent communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset help professionals convey insights and work effectively with educators and administrators. These skills are essential for interpreting educational data, driving improvements in teaching and learning, and supporting data-driven decisions in academic environments.

What is a Learning Analytics job?

A Learning Analytics job involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data related to learners' performance and educational experiences. Professionals in this field use data-driven insights to improve teaching strategies, personalize learning experiences, and enhance institutional decision-making. They work with various analytical tools, machine learning models, and data visualization techniques to identify patterns and trends. This role is common in educational institutions, corporate training programs, and EdTech companies.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Learning Analytics?

Professionals in Learning Analytics typically spend their days collecting, cleaning, and analyzing educational data to identify patterns that can improve student outcomes and learning processes. They work closely with faculty, instructional designers, and IT teams to generate reports, visualize trends, and advise on data-backed strategies for curriculum improvement. Day-to-day tasks also involve maintaining data integrity, developing dashboards, and communicating findings in accessible ways to stakeholders. Collaboration and ongoing learning are integral, as the field continually evolves with advances in education technology and analytical methods.

What are the 4 types of learning analytics?

Learning analytics can be categorized into four types: descriptive analytics, which analyze past learning data; diagnostic analytics, which identify reasons for learning outcomes; predictive analytics, which forecast future performance; and prescriptive analytics, which recommend actions to improve learning. These types help educators and analysts understand and enhance educational experiences using data analysis tools and techniques.

Is AI replacing data analysts?

Learning Analytics professionals analyze educational data to improve learning outcomes and often use AI tools to automate data processing and generate insights. While AI can handle routine tasks, data analysts are still essential for interpreting complex data, making strategic decisions, and ensuring data quality. AI complements their work but does not fully replace the need for skilled analysts in the field.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Learning Analytics is a field that values skills and experience over age; many professionals transition into data science at 40 or later. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and tools like Python or R, along with practical experience. Age should not be a barrier to entering data-driven roles if you focus on continuous learning and building a strong portfolio.

What does a learning analyst do?

A learning analyst evaluates educational data to improve learning outcomes by analyzing student performance, engagement, and instructional effectiveness. They use data analysis tools and techniques to identify trends and recommend strategies for curriculum development, often working with learning management systems and reporting software.

Job description

Overview

At Emler Swim & Gym, we believe confident kids build brighter futures. For decades, families have trusted us to create safe, fun, and empowering experiences through swim lessons, gymnastics, and youth programs. Behind every great student experience is a team of passionate, capable leaders — and we’re looking for a Director of Leadership Development to help shape and grow that leadership culture across our organization.

This is a high-impact role for a strategic builder who also loves execution. You’ll own the full learning lifecycle — from identifying organizational needs and designing scalable programs to facilitating training, measuring impact, and continuously improving the employee experience for more than 1,800 team members.

If you are energized by leadership development, adult learning, organizational growth, and building meaningful learning experiences in a people-centered environment, we’d love to meet you.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management Development
  • Design and deliver scalable leadership development programs for leaders at every level — from first-time managers to senior leaders
  • Build and maintain role-specific success profiles aligned to Emler Swim & Gym’s growth strategy
  • Create development pathways for high-potential talent, including coaching frameworks, mentorship programs, online learning, and peer communities
  • Conduct organization-wide learning needs assessments and skills gap analyses to identify development priorities
  • Partner closely with the CHRO, Operations leaders, and HR Business Partners to align learning strategies with business goals and workforce planning
  • Facilitate leadership feedback and post-training surveys to support self-awareness and measure effectiveness
Culture & Employee Experience
  • Ensure learning experiences reinforce Emler Swim & Gym’s culture and values throughout the employee journey
  • Support engagement survey initiatives and help leaders build actionable improvement plans
  • Partner with HR and Operations on succession planning and career pathing initiatives
Training Design, Delivery & Measurement
  • Establish measurable goals and reporting cadences for all learning programs, using LMS data, assessments, operational metrics, and business outcomes to demonstrate ROI
  • Design blended learning solutions for a distributed, frontline-heavy workforce
  • Coach site leaders and HR partners to build internal facilitation and training capability
  • Deliver engaging in-person and virtual learning experiences tailored to diverse audiences
  • Ensure training content aligns with employment law requirements in partnership with HR
  • Use data and learner feedback to continuously improve programs and retire ineffective content
What Makes You Successful

You are:

  • Passionate about developing people and creating meaningful employee experiences
  • Equally comfortable building strategy and executing independently
  • Skilled at diagnosing organizational needs and translating them into actionable learning solutions
  • A strong instructional designer with expertise in adult learning and blended learning approaches
  • An engaging facilitator who can connect with frontline staff, managers, and senior leaders alike
  • Data-driven and comfortable using analytics to measure impact and improve outcomes
  • A collaborative partner who influences effectively across teams and functions
  • Adaptable, growth-oriented, and energized by organizational change

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Development, Education, Human Resources, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • ATD (CPTD/CPLP), SHRM, or related certification preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive Learning & Development experience, including experience in a senior or lead individual contributor role
  • Demonstrated experience designing leadership programs, conducting needs assessments, and building curriculum from the ground up
  • Experience partnering with subject matter experts to create and refine learning content
  • Proven success facilitating both in-person and virtual training sessions
  • Experience using LMS platforms and learning analytics to measure effectiveness and report results
  • Experience supporting a multi-site or frontline-heavy workforce strongly preferred
  • Comfortable operating as a highly hands-on individual contributor
