What is a leadership development trainer?

A Leadership Development Trainer is a professional who designs and delivers training programs to help individuals and organizations develop effective leadership skills. They assess training needs, create customized workshops, and provide coaching on topics like communication, team building, conflict resolution, and decision-making. Their goal is to empower leaders at all levels to perform better, adapt to change, and drive organizational success. These trainers often work in corporate settings, educational institutions, or as independent consultants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a leadership development trainer?

To thrive as a Leadership Development Trainer, you need expertise in adult learning principles, facilitation skills, and a background in leadership theory or organizational development, often supported by a relevant degree or certification like CPLP or SHRM. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), virtual training platforms, and assessment tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to inspire and coach others set top trainers apart. These skills are crucial for effectively developing leaders, enhancing organizational performance, and adapting training to diverse learner needs.

How do leadership development trainers typically measure the impact of their training programs within an organization?

Leadership Development Trainers often use a combination of feedback surveys, pre- and post-training assessments, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness of their programs. They may track participant progress in leadership competencies, monitor retention and promotion rates, and gather feedback from both trainees and their managers. Collaborating closely with HR and department heads, trainers analyze these metrics to continuously refine content and delivery methods, ensuring the training aligns with organizational goals and drives real behavioral change.

This is a part-time, variable-hour/project-based opportunity. Hours are scheduled in advance based on client engagements; there is no guaranteed weekly schedule or minimum number of hours.

Kaleidoscope provides structured curricula, facilitator guides, participant materials, exercises, scenarios, and learning tools. Facilitators will be oriented to Kaleidoscope's instructional approach and the requirements of each client engagement before independently leading sessions.

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • 7+ years of experience in leadership development, management development, professional skills training, learning and development, organizational development, or a closely related field

  • Experience delivering both onsite and virtual learning

Highly Preferred

  • Experience facilitating supervisors and managers in municipal government, public-sector organizations, healthcare, higher education, transportation, utilities, manufacturing, or other complex workforce environments
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating across union-represented and non-union employee populations, including environments where collective bargaining agreements, workforce rules, or management-labor dynamics affect communication, accountability, performance management, change, or team effectiveness
  • Everything DiSC, Five Behaviors, Hogan, CliftonStrengths, EQ-i or similar assessment qualification
  • ICF coaching credential, ATD credential, SHRM certification, organizational-development credential, facilitation certification, or relevant graduate degree
