Job Title: Production Cook
Location: LC Valley Shelter
Reports To: Production Chef
UGM considers every position one of ministry and a vital and valued part of our team. Additionally, employees must be willing to lead and/or participate in Bible study, prayer, devotions and sharing the Gospel.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Production Cook assists the Production Chef with daily food preparation, meal service, and kitchen operations. This role supports a Christ-centered, co-ed shelter by ensuring meals are served with excellence, donated food is used sustainably, and clients and volunteers are supervised with care and dignity. The Production Cook helps maintain safe, clean, and welcoming food service spaces.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Result Area #1: Culinary Production & Meal Service
  • Collaborate with the Production Chef while executing the prep/production needs of associated facilities and ministries.
  • Prepare and produce meals according to menus, recipes, and dietary guidelines.
  • Oversee food prep, portion control, storage, and cleanliness standards.
  • Assist with special meals, events, and BEOs as assigned.
  • Maintain meal counts and assist in monthly meal reporting.
  • Monitor inventory, rotation, and safe food storage in collaboration with the Production Chef and Warehouse Manager.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and secure kitchens, storage rooms, and equipment areas.

Key Result Area #2: Supervision & Leadership
  • Supervise and train clients, volunteers, and community service workers in meal prep, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Model UGM's Christ-centered culture and uphold health codes, Idaho Food Bank, 2nd Harvest, and OSHA standards.
  • Communicate schedules, changes, and culinary needs clearly and professionally.
  • Report critical issues, incidents, or maintenance needs to the Production Chef promptly.

Key Result Area #3: Client and Volunteer Engagement
  • Provide accountability and coaching to clients participating in Work Therapy/Chore.
  • Collaborate with shelter teams to reinforce UGM Rescue program expectations.
  • Record client-related concerns using Waypoint Client Database; process by end of shift.
  • Support training, encouragement, and scheduling of kitchen volunteers.
  • Track volunteer hours and ensure compliance with kitchen safety policies.
  • Ensure volunteers wear appropriate attire and identification.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Committed Christian, able, and willing to model servant-leadership and interested in being part of a ministry for the poor, homeless, drug addicted and mentally ill. Grounded in the Christian faith as a mature, active member of the body of Christ. In accordance with Union Gospel Mission Statement of Purpose, Statement of Vision, and Statement of Faith.

  • Ability to supervise and mentor others, including individuals in recovery.
  • Available to work weekends, special events, holidays and at various UGM locations as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Food Handler's Card, SERV Safe Certification, and Forklift Certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Valid WA or ID driver's license and insurable by UGM.
  • TB clearance required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS:

  • Work is primarily indoors with exposure to variable conditions and need to be able to withstand changes in temperature, occasional smoke, steam, heat, and exposure to chemicals - continuously.
  • Requires finger/hand dexterity to operate kitchen machinery, equipment, knives, etc. - continuously.
  • Ability to hear, see, taste, smell and speak clearly - continuously.
  • Working with a diverse population, many of whom struggle with homelessness, addiction, and mental illness - continuously.
  • Occasional exposure to seasonal weather conditions, and may require sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and going from building to building - frequently.
  • Requires a sustained level of high energy, stamina, and the ability to move about multiple facilities - frequently.
  • Able to work ten hour-plus shifts with the ability to stand, climb stairs, ladders, carry objects, sit or walk for extended periods of time - occasionally.
  • Ability to grasp, lift and/or carry 25 lbs. - continuously.
