How much do lead power electronics engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for lead power electronics engineer in the United States is $123,784.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,500.00 and $135,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead Power Electronics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Power Electronics Engineer, you need a deep understanding of power electronics design, circuit analysis, and system integration, typically with a degree in electrical engineering and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, and PCB design software, as well as certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer), are commonly required. Strong leadership, project management, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills are vital for delivering innovative, reliable solutions while leading teams and ensuring project success in complex engineering environments.

What does a Lead Power Electronics Engineer do?

A Lead Power Electronics Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing the creation of power electronic systems such as converters, inverters, and power supplies. They lead teams in developing new technologies for applications like renewable energy, electric vehicles, and industrial automation. Their role also involves troubleshooting, testing, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Additionally, they often collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive projects from concept to production while mentoring junior engineers.

How does a Lead Power Electronics Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a Lead Power Electronics Engineer, you'll regularly collaborate with mechanical engineers, firmware developers, and project managers to ensure that power systems integrate seamlessly into larger products. This often involves participating in design reviews, troubleshooting interdisciplinary issues, and coordinating timelines to align electrical development with mechanical and software milestones. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving are crucial, as you'll often serve as the bridge between the power electronics team and other departments. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also provides opportunities to expand your knowledge across related engineering fields.

What is the difference between Lead Power Electronics Engineer vs Power Electronics Engineer?

AspectLead Power Electronics EngineerPower Electronics Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, certifications like IEEE, PMP (optional)Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, certifications like IEEE
Work EnvironmentLeading design teams, project management, strategic planningDesign, develop, test power electronic circuits and systems
Industry UsageUsed in advanced projects, R&D, and leadership rolesApplied in product development, testing, and manufacturing

The main difference is that a Lead Power Electronics Engineer typically oversees projects, manages teams, and sets strategic direction, while a Power Electronics Engineer focuses on designing and developing power electronic systems. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, but the lead position involves more leadership and project management responsibilities.
