What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lead designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Designer, you need advanced design skills, a strong portfolio, and experience with design principles and team leadership, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Mastery of industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch, and familiarity with project management systems are essential. A Lead Designer frequently works cross-functionally, coordinating closely with product managers, developers, and marketing teams to ensure design solutions align with business objectives and technical constraints. This collaboration helps maintain consistency in user experience and brand identity while ensuring that deliverables meet deadlines and stakeholder expectations.

A lead designer is in charge of the creative aspects of a project. As a lead designer, you may work with a creative director to oversee design of a video game, a multimedia project, or website. Your job duties in this career include meeting with clients to assess their needs, creating a framework for the project, and working with an art team to execute the plan according to specifications. QISG is seeking professionals interested in working to support large-scale engineering and construction projects throughout North America by providing structural design solutions to our construction partners and clients.
About this Role

  • Develop and maintain 2D & 3D models of structural framing and reinforced concrete using various CAD software.
  • Produce detailed design drawings including overall plans, enlarged plans, sections, elevations and details, as well as 3D models developed in collaboration with engineers from conceptual sketches, specifications and engineering calculations while following QISG or client specific standards.
  • Work on structural and foundation design aspects from project inception to completion on various infrastructure projects.
  • Interface closely with and support project teams with the ability to learn new software and develop new deliverables for varying structural project scopes.
  • Communicate across multiple teams and disciplines to prevent design conflicts throughout a project lifecycle.

  • Research information in catalogs, specifications, corporate standards, or other reference material.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of quality control procedures to ensure the highest standards of workmanship.
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their work.
  • Learn and apply corporate standard engineering practices.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in drafting disciplines with a background in civil/structural, substation, or transmission design
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the electric/power utility industry performing detailed CAD/design
  • Strong background in structural steel and reinforced concrete detailing as well as bill of material creation
  • Basic knowledge of ASTM, AISC and ACI standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
  • Ability to work with moderate supervision and maximum efficiency in a small or medium-sized office setting
  • Experience with Vault, Advance Steel, Inventor, and REVIT preferred
  • Familiarity with the major electrical and structural components of a substation and the drawings required to construct one preferred
