What are Lead Building Engineers?

Lead Building Engineers are responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety. They supervise engineering staff, coordinate maintenance schedules, and ensure that building systems operate efficiently and safely. Additionally, they may manage budgets, handle vendor relationships, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Their role is crucial for keeping commercial or industrial facilities running smoothly and minimizing downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead Building Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Building Engineer, you need expertise in building systems maintenance, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing, often backed by a technical degree or relevant certifications such as HVAC or EPA Universal. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and safety regulations is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help coordinate teams and manage emergencies effectively. These competencies are critical for ensuring facility reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

What are some common challenges Lead Building Engineers face when managing multiple facilities?

Lead Building Engineers often oversee several buildings or a large facility, which can present challenges such as coordinating maintenance schedules, addressing unexpected equipment failures, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations across all sites. Meta is seeking a Lead Building Engineer to join our Data Center Critical Facility Operations team. Our data centers are the backbone of the infrastructure that powers Meta's global platforms, and this role is central to keeping those systems running at peak reliability. As a Lead Building Engineer, you will provide senior-level technical leadership across mechanical, electrical, and controls systems within a critical facility environment, driving operational excellence, mentoring other engineers, and ensuring continuous uptime across mission-critical infrastructure.

  • Mentor other engineers and technicians on technical best practices, equipment operation, and safety standards within the critical facility environment
  • Utilize building management systems and monitoring platforms to analyze system performance, identify anomalies, and drive proactive resolution of potential faults before they impact operations
  • Lead root cause analysis investigations following equipment failures or operational incidents, documenting findings and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to plan and execute capital projects, equipment upgrades, and system commissioning activities
  • Manage work order workflows in the enterprise asset management system, ensuring accurate documentation of maintenance activities, parts usage, and equipment history
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to the facility operations and maintenance program, including energy efficiency initiatives and infrastructure reliability enhancements
  • Respond to and lead the resolution of critical facility emergencies, coordinating resources and communications across operations, engineering, and management teams

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of experience in critical facility operations, data center engineering, or a related technical field encompassing mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or controls systems
  • Experience leading or coordinating maintenance activities and technical teams within a mission-critical or 24x7 operational environment
  • Experience troubleshooting and operating complex building systems including power distribution, cooling infrastructure, and building management or monitoring systems
  • Experience developing or improving standard operating procedures, preventive maintenance programs, or change management processes in a critical environment
  • Experience conducting root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions following equipment failures or operational incidents

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years experience in a data center or other Critical Environment (pharma, clean room, medical, power production, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Associates Degree, Trade Certification or state licensure in Electrical or Mechanical (HVAC)
