Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: TEACHER-SPECIAL EDUCATION - LBD Responsible To: Principal Assistant Principal Director of Special Education Basic Function: To help special needs students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible citizens. This employee designs and implements instruction for students with disabilities in Rowan County Schools. The employee is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating individual educational programs for students based on individual student needs and the goals and objectives of the Rowan County Board of Education and administration. Performance Responsibilities:
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Encourages student to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Communicates with parents, students, outside agencies and other professionals.
  • Develops IEPs for students that comply with RCS and KDE regulations and guidelines
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Maintains student caseload in regard to compliance with IEP development and three year re-evaluations, communication and consultation with other teachers and related service providers (e.g., student accommodations, modifications, etc.)
  • Gathers ongoing instructional and behavioral data
  • Plans and adjusts daily instructional and behavioral programs based on data
  • Assesses student progress and reports to parents, at minimum, through IEP progress reports as specified in IEP
  • Requisitions material and equipment and performs other clerical tasks required
  • Implements instruction and behavior management
  • Facilitates IEP meetings for caseload students using established RCS meeting protocol
  • Functions as a member of a professional team
  • Carries out transition activities with parents and other professionals
  • Uses IEP software
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Valid Kentucky Teaching Certificate for Teacher of Exceptional Children, LBD
Successful experience working with special needs students or in a special needs classroom setting preferred, but not required. Knowledge of:
  • Federal, state and local regulations, policies and procedures of Special Education Due Process
  • Student Information System/IEP software (Infinite Campus)
  • Evaluation Instruments & eligibility criteria
  • Progress Monitoring, Data Collection & Analysis
  • Specialized methodology for teaching students with disabilities (academic & behavior strategies)
Terms of Employment:
  • Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.
Evaluation:
  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy for Professional Personnel.
