Job description

Teach What You Love. Inspire Curious Minds.

Compass Homeschool Program is hiring instructors for several specific openings for the 2026โ€“27 school year. We are looking for enthusiastic teachers, coaches, subject-matter experts, and skilled professionals who enjoy working with youth in a creative, flexible, in-person learning environment.

Compass is a homeschool learning center in Herndon, Virginia, serving students in Kโ€“12th grade. Our small, daytime classes go beyond standard school curriculum. Families are looking for depth, creativity, hands-on learning, strong instruction, and meaningful student engagement.

We are currently seeking instructors for the following positions:

1. JAPANESE LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTRUCTOR

Compass is seeking a Japanese Language and Culture Instructor to teach beginning Japanese to English-speaking students in 5thโ€“12th grade, approximately ages 10โ€“17.

  • Classes will meet on Tuesdays for 30 weeks, beginning September 8. The instructor will teach two 55-minute classes at:

---11:00 am
---12:15 pm

  • This course should introduce students to foundational Japanese language skills, including pronunciation, conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and writing systems, while also incorporating Japanese culture, customs, geography, food, holidays, history, and modern cultural connections.
  • This position is a strong fit for a fluent speaker, native speaker, experienced tutor, former teacher, graduate student, or subject-matter expert who can make beginning Japanese accessible and engaging for young learners.

2. LATIN INSTRUCTOR

Compass is seeking a Latin Instructor for students of various ages and levels. The specific day and time are still to be determined and may be shaped around the instructorโ€™s and students' availability and area of expertise.

  • The ideal instructor can teach Latin vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, translation, and reading while also connecting the language to Roman history, mythology, classical literature, English vocabulary roots, and the ancient world.
  • This position may be a good fit for a Latin teacher, classics scholar, experienced tutor, graduate student, retired teacher, adjunct instructor, or subject-matter expert who can make Latin clear, structured, and engaging.

About the Teaching Environment

Most Compass classes meet once per week during the daytime. Class sizes are small, and students are homeschooled learners whose families choose Compass for engaging, in-person instruction and enrichment.

You do not need to be a licensed teacher. You do need strong subject knowledge, preparation, enthusiasm, classroom management skills, and a genuine interest in working with children and teens.
