Job description

Our customers seek to image, measure, and fabricate at the nanometer scale and below. Applications range from nanotechnology and semiconductor fabrication to life science and high energy laser physics. As part of TMC's Technical Sales team, the Applications Engineer will be responsible for identifying customer needs and developing optimal proposals from TMC's product portfolio of configurable and custom solutions. The Applications Engineer is a brand ambassador, representing TMC via frequent customer interaction daily via phone and email, as well as trade show support and occasional customer site visits.
The position requires organization and focus to serve the needs of customers from many different technical and scientific disciplines with varying applications and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. To succeed, one must possess strong technical and sales skills, good communication and interpersonal skills with a professional approach. The position requires competent technical problem-solving skills, drawing on a technical degree to work independently as well as with team members from senior management, sales, marketing, engineering, design, R&D, and manufacturing to solve customer problems with complete solutions.
Job Responsibilities Include:
  • Own customer inquiries by providing timely and professional responses to domestic and international customers, communicating commercial and technical information related to TMC products
  • Analyze customer technical data to gain understanding of the customer's application and develop customer-specific solutions
  • Represent TMC at trade shows 2-3 times per year
  • Serve as a hub of activity; perform as a key interface between customers, field sales, service, marketing, production, and engineering
  • Define and document special customer product configurations
  • Prepare and execute customer presentations, quotations, bid packages, and proposals
  • Working alongside the sales team, utilize TMC's internal CRM system, Salesforce.com, to track customer inquiries, record leads, close opportunities, generate quotes, follow up with customers, forecast revenue and perform other sales and marketing analyses
  • Generate, review, and price special customer configurations, and provide written quotes for such configurations directly to the customer. Follow up on quotes directly with the customer or with the TMC Field Sales Representative and Distributors
  • Contribute to short- and long-term product development and improvement plans by actively collecting VOC and market intelligence related to emerging technology and competitive activities, maintaining an awareness of TMC markets, customers, sales opportunities, competitors, and products
  • Travel to customer sites (often with local sales, service, product team) to present proposals, resolve technical issues, and assist in closing orders
  • Review customer POs, support the customer service team to manage timelines, ship dates and shipping priorities
  • Assist in the preparation of application notes, case studies, technical literature, and other digital content including video product demonstrations and webinars
  • Prepare, conduct, and participate in training and education programs focusing on product capabilities and applications
  • Demonstrate a professional approach to the job with good interpersonal skills among customers and office staff

Position Requirements:
  • B.S. in an Engineering discipline or a Physical Science. BSME or BS Physics a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in technical sales or engineering. Experience in vibration measurement and/or control a plus
  • Good sales skills, and a strong entrepreneurial drive
  • Expected to quickly develop knowledge of TMC vibration control and related products to understand their basic design and operation, capabilities, and limitations
  • Attention to detail and good time management skills
  • Proficient in all MS-Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.). Experience with Microsoft Dynamics AX a plus
  • Experience with Salesforce.com, or other CRM, a plus
  • Previous experience with optical or electron microscopy, semiconductor equipment, materials research, or cell biology, a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills for working with customers and in-house personnel. Must be an effective communicator (verbal and written) both within TMC and with customers
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while focusing on the task at hand
  • Ability to travel about 10-20% of the time both domestically and internationally
