The Application Engineer will work with state of the art laser processing equipment and will develop new laser processing applications. The ideal applicant is a hands-on person who enjoys working with machinery and electronics. Additionally, a good work ethic and strong interpersonal skills are required since the position involves daily contact with IPG customers.


Duties include:

  • Development of laser based processes and technologies
  • Set up & operation of robotic & CNC laser welding / cutting /drilling equipment for customer application testing
  • Perform inspection of samples, including optical microscopy and metallographic cross sectioning, polishing for weld inspection, as well as mechanical testing
  • Documentation of test results in electronic reportsand data banks
  • Responsible for maintenance of lab equipment
  • Support of engineering development activities, sales support and customer applications support
  • Demonstrate laser systems and technologies for customer
  • Demonstration and applications processing development at IPG locations, customer locations, trade shows and conferences; up to 15% travel
  • BS Engineering degree required, advanced degree is desirable
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field for higher skilled candidate
  • Experience with ultrafast pulse lasers (nanosecond, picosecond, femtosecond)
  • Familiarity with metallographic and mechanical testing is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with material science and experience working with different material compositions is a plus
  • 3 - 5 years' experience in similar role
  • Background in electronics, machine or manufacturing technology
  • Experience with CAD/CAM, CNC or robotic system programming
  • Previous industrial laser applications experience a plus
