What is a language engineer?

A Language Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes language-related technologies, such as natural language processing (NLP) models, speech recognition systems, and machine translation tools. They work with linguistic data, improve language models, and create rules and algorithms to enhance text and speech processing. This role often involves collaborating with software engineers, data scientists, and linguists to refine language-based AI systems. Language Engineers also help expand language support for AI applications by curating datasets and improving system accuracy.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a language engineer?

Language Engineers typically spend their days developing, testing, and improving language models and algorithms used in applications such as chatbots, voice assistants, and translation tools. They collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers, and linguists to collect and annotate data, refine language processing workflows, and address real-world linguistic challenges. Regular tasks may include designing rule-based systems, implementing machine learning models, evaluating system performance, and troubleshooting language-specific issues. This role often requires balancing independent work with team collaboration to ensure language technologies meet both technical and user experience goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the language engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Language Engineer, you need a strong background in computational linguistics, natural language processing (NLP), and programming languages such as Python or Java, often supported by a degree in computer science, linguistics, or related fields. Familiarity with NLP libraries (e.g., NLTK, spaCy), machine learning frameworks, and tools for text annotation and data processing is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies enable Language Engineers to build robust language models, collaborate across interdisciplinary teams, and address complex language-related challenges in technology products.

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward.

Job Role and Responsibility: AMD, Inc. is hiring MTS Silicon Design Engineer to Research, design, develop, and/or test electronic components and systems for semiconductor and related device manufacturing, employing knowledge of electronic theory. Perform pre-Silicon Functional Verification of next generation high performance Microprocessor designs. Develop and execute on verification testplans at various levels of design hierarchy including unit and full-chip environments. Develop high level language testbench components including stimulus drivers, BFMs, behavioral models, monitors and checkers. Develop, simulate and debug directed random stimulus and assembly level tests to find bugs in the microprocessor design; verify the functionality and verify conformance to the ISA. Find bugs in the design and work with RTL writers to resolve all simulation failures and discrepancies. Develop and analyze assertions and coverage terms.  Participate in technical reviews of specifications, design, and testplans.  Identify and address areas of concern to meet design quality objectives. Develop tools, infrastructure, processes and flows to enable functional verification. Document testplans and testbench component plans and drive reviews with peers and stakeholders. Maintain and improve existing functional verification infrastructure and methodology. When presented with Silicon issues, replicate in the pre-silicon environment and provide debug expertise to root cause the issue and ensure complete validation. Contribute towards and drive as needed pre-silicon and/or post-silicon verification of complex architectural and microarchitectural features. Drive project deliverables and dependencies with cross-site Architects, RTL writers, and Physical Design engineers. Independently develop quality, timely and cost-effective solutions.
