Landscape managers oversee the landscaping needs of office parks, schools, government buildings, and shopping centers. The duties of landscape managers include purchasing plants and other landscaping material, maintenance of landscaping equipment, and hiring and direction of staff. As a landscape manager, you must be able to design a pleasant outdoor setting within the project budget and have in-depth knowledge of the region’s climate and natural flora.

What are some common challenges a landscape manager faces when overseeing multiple projects and teams?

Landscape Managers often juggle several projects at once, each with its own deadlines, client expectations, and site-specific challenges. Coordinating diverse teams—such as horticulturists, groundskeepers, and contractors—requires strong communication and organizational skills. Weather, supply chain delays, and changing client needs can also impact schedules, so adaptability and proactive problem-solving are essential. Establishing clear processes and regular check-ins can help manage these complexities and ensure successful project delivery.

Both roles are essential in the landscaping industry but serve different functions within projects.

Is landscape management a stressful job?

Landscape management can be stressful due to the physical demands, tight deadlines, and the need to coordinate with clients and team members. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality landscaping projects, ensuring client satisfaction, and maintaining efficient operations.

Job description

Traveling Senior Site Superintendent (Commercial & Landscaping) – Lead Elite Conference Center Development & High-End Site Execution

Job Overview

Company: Pro Commercial

Salary/Pay Rate: $110,000 – $130,000 per year, plus performance and year-end bonuses plus $5,000 sign on bonus

Location: Huxley, IA (HQ & local project base)

Job/Employment Type: Full-Time, Monday to Friday

Project Scope: High-End Commercial Conference Center & Elite Hardscape/Landscape Exteriors

Industry: General Construction (Commercial Development)

The Opportunity

Pro Commercial is seeking a high-caliber, hands-on Site Superintendent to lead a premier, high-end commercial conference center project from the ground up. This is not a standard "inside the four walls" build. Because this flagship development blends sophisticated structural design with extensive, high-end exterior architecture, we need a superintendent who is equally master of both.

You will own the job site, coordinating highly complex civil, structural, and luxury exterior/landscaping scopes. If you are an assertive, organized leader who commands respect on-site, thrives on meticulous layout coordination, and wants to build a landmark property, this is your project.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Total Site Command: Direct day-to-day field operations, structural trades, and exterior/landscaping crews, ensuring a seamless flow between indoor building structures and outdoor environments.
  • Masterful Site Coordination: Manage tight logistical footprints, orchestrating staging, material deliveries, and heavy machinery to prevent structural and landscape trades from stepping on one another.
  • Exterior & Landscape Oversight: Drive the execution of high-end exterior packages, including massive earthwork, complex grading, decorative concrete/paving, structural retaining walls, advanced drainage systems, and extensive softscape elements.
  • Defensive Quality Control: Enforce elite craftsmanship standards, ensuring all structural framing, MEP rough-ins, civil works, and high-spec architectural finishes match blueprints flawlessly.
  • Subcontractor Accountability: Serve as the primary on-site authority, holding MEP, structural, grading, and landscaping subcontractors to strict schedules and zero-tolerance safety policies.
  • Proactive Problem Solving: Identify plan discrepancies early (particularly where civil grading, utilities, and landscape plans intersect) and coordinate directly with project managers and design teams to resolve them before they cost time.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Site Superintendent leading commercial construction projects ($10M+ project scope preferred).
  • Landscape/Exterior Expertise: Proven, hands-on experience managing substantial site packages, civil grading, hardscaping, and large-scale, high-end landscape/exterior execution.
  • Technical Acumen: Elite blueprint reading skills, with the ability to reconcile architectural, structural, civil, and landscape plans seamlessly.
  • Site Management: Strong track record of running daily stand-ups, managing complex sub schedules, and maintaining flawless safety records.
  • Location: Must be able to reliably commute to or relocate to the Huxley, IA area. Valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience building hospitality structures, country clubs, or conference centers.
  • Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
  • Proficient with modern site-tech, layout instruments, and construction management software (e.g., Procore, UDA).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $110,000 – $130,000 per year, plus highly competitive performance and year-end bonuses plus $5,000 sign on bonus.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, HSA, life, and disability coverage.
  • Perks & Tech: Company-provided vehicle, fuel card/mileage reimbursement, and an updated tech package (tablet/smartphone).
  • Work-Life Balance: Generous paid time off (PTO, holidays, sick leave), relocation assistance, and travel per diems if ever deployed outside the primary region.
  • Long-Term Growth: Retirement plan with company match, ongoing certifications, and a direct path to executive field leadership.
