Landscape Division Manager information

What is a landscape division manager?

A Landscape Division Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the operations and staff within a landscaping division of a company. They manage teams that design, install, and maintain landscapes for residential, commercial, or municipal clients. Their duties often include project planning, budgeting, client communication, and ensuring quality and safety standards are met. They play a key role in business development and customer satisfaction within the landscaping sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape division manager?

To thrive as a Landscape Division Manager, you need expertise in landscape design, project management, and horticulture, often backed by a degree in landscaping or a related field and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with landscape management software, budgeting tools, and certifications like CLT or CLP are commonly required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities help you lead teams and coordinate with clients effectively. These skills ensure projects are completed efficiently, clients are satisfied, and the division operates profitably.

What are some common challenges a landscape division manager might face when leading multiple project teams?

A Landscape Division Manager often oversees several project teams simultaneously, which can present challenges such as coordinating schedules, managing resources across different sites, and ensuring consistent quality standards. Balancing client expectations while meeting deadlines and budget constraints requires strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, adapting to unexpected issues like weather delays or supply shortages is a frequent part of the role. Successful managers foster collaboration among team members and proactively address problems to keep projects on track.

What is the difference between Landscape Division Manager vs Landscape Supervisor?

AspectLandscape Division ManagerLandscape Supervisor
ResponsibilitiesOversees multiple projects, manages teams, plans budgets, and develops strategies for landscape operations.Directly supervises crew members, ensures daily tasks are completed, and maintains quality standards on specific sites.
CredentialsTypically requires a degree or certification in landscape architecture or horticulture, along with management experience.Often requires experience in landscaping and relevant certifications, but less emphasis on management credentials.
Work EnvironmentOffice-based planning combined with site visits; oversees multiple crews and projects.Primarily on-site supervision of landscaping crews and project execution.

The main difference between a Landscape Division Manager and a Landscape Supervisor lies in scope and responsibilities. The manager handles strategic planning, budgeting, and overseeing multiple projects, while the supervisor focuses on daily site operations and team supervision. Both roles require relevant horticultural knowledge, but the manager typically has additional management credentials and a broader work scope.

Job description

ALPHA Landscapes — Erosion Control Crew Foreman/Operator (Johnston, IA)

ALPHA Landscapes is seeking an experienced Erosion Control Foreman/Operator to be a part of our seeding and erosion control division completing projects across central Iowa.

ALPHA Landscapes is a 100% new-construction focused landscape and erosion control company working with the top general contractors and developers in the area. We pride ourselves on creating an environment where our employees look forward to coming to work every day, and being part of a TEAM that sets them up for success, all while working on the top construction projects in central Iowa.

ALPHA Landscapes started with a pickup truck and a wheelbarrow in 2018 and has now grown into the largest commercial landscape construction firm in Iowa with top of the line trucks and equipment, and 50+ employees operating out of our Johnston office.

This role is different from our other foreman positions in one important way: you will typically be running jobs solo or with one helper. You are the crew. That means we need someone who can load out, get to the site, execute the work correctly the first time, and document it — without daily hand-holding. It's a high-autonomy, high-trust position.

This is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing, yet stable company, with typical hours between 40-60 weekly, March-December (Hours may be available in offseason depending on your skillset), pay starting at $20-26/hr, with earning potential upwards of $30+/hr.

What does a typical day look like?

  • Loading materials and equipment at the shop every morning
  • Traveling to the jobsite and sometimes between multiple active sites in a day
  • Seeding: calibrating and setting seed and fertilizer rates to spec, permanent and temporary mixes
  • Straw mulching and crimping, erosion control blanket
  • Silt fence installation
  • Equipment operation — skid loader, tractor, seeder, straw blower, silt fence installer, trailering between sites
  • Communicating with ALPHA project and field operations managers

Required; you must have verifiable experience with:

  • Seeding, including knowing how to set and calibrate seed and fertilizer rates
  • Tractor and skid loader operation
  • Silt fence installation
  • Straw mulching
  • General erosion control BMP installation and maintenance

This experience can come from an erosion control contractor or from an agricultural background. If you've been running a drill, a broadcast spreader, and a bale processor on a farm, we want to talk to you.

Also required at minimum:

  • 3+ years erosion control, construction, or ag experience
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record; comfortable towing equipment trailers
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own day
  • Time management skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Prior experience working independently or being in charge of a crew.

Preferred:

  • CDL (We provide free CDL training for those without one)
  • Familiarity with SWPPP requirements and construction site inspection documentation
  • Ability to read plans and civil/grading drawings

Benefits include!

  • Competitive industry pay
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Retirement plans with 3% company match
  • 100% company funded life insurance
  • Health insurance options

All new hire candidates will be required to take a drug test upon arrival their first day at ALPHA Landscapes. In the event the candidate tests positive, the candidate will not be able to start until they provide a negative test. ALPHA Landscapes holds the right to withdraw the offer at any time unless a negative test is provided. Candidates who refuse to submit to a drug test will no longer be considered for employment, and any offer of employment will be rescinded.
