What is a land development EIT?

A Land Development EIT (Engineer-in-Training) is an entry-level civil engineer who assists in the planning, design, and permitting of residential, commercial, and industrial land development projects. EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed professional engineers, helping with site layout, grading, stormwater management, and utility design. They are often recent engineering graduates who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and are working toward becoming licensed Professional Engineers (PE). This role involves a mix of office-based design work and field visits to project sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a land development EIT?

To thrive as a Land Development EIT (Engineer-in-Training), you need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, a passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and a solid understanding of site design and grading. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D, stormwater modeling software, and GIS systems is typically required. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial to ensure accurate project designs, regulatory compliance, and productive collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.
