What does a lab manager do?

A Lab Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a laboratory. Their duties typically include supervising staff, ensuring safety protocols are followed, managing inventory and ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Lab Managers also coordinate experiments and research activities, and may handle budgeting and administrative tasks. Their role is crucial in ensuring the lab runs efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lab manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lab Manager, you need expertise in laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and scientific analysis, typically supported by a degree in a relevant science field and prior lab experience. Build a Career in Industrial Chemistry

Do you enjoy working with chemical processes, troubleshooting problems, and taking responsibility for systems that keep manufacturing running?

Avtec Finishing is looking for an experienced Chemical Maintenance Technician to maintain the production chemistry, filtration systems, and chemical support processes used throughout our metal finishing operation.

This is not a general production position. It is a critical technical role that directly supports product quality, production efficiency, employee safety, and environmental compliance.

Our work supports the medical, aerospace, defense, and industrial manufacturing industries, where process consistency and attention to detail are essential.

If you're safety-focused, mechanically inclined, comfortable working with industrial chemicals, and looking for a long-term technical career, we'd like to meet you.

Position Summary

The Chemical Maintenance Technician maintains production chemistry, chemical filtration systems, and related equipment while supporting wastewater treatment and hazardous waste operations.

This position works closely with the Chemical Lab Manager and production departments to maintain chemical processes within specification, prevent unnecessary downtime, and ensure work is completed safely and according to company and environmental requirements.

What You'll Do
  • Maintain production chemistry by completing chemical additions, solution make-ups, adjustments, and maintenance as directed by the Chemical Lab Manager.
  • Perform batch treatments and production tank change-outs.
  • Maintain chemical filtration systems throughout the production facility.
  • Monitor chemical systems and help identify process conditions that may affect production or product quality.
  • Perform weekly and monthly chemical inventories.
  • Maintain chemical maintenance equipment in proper working condition.
  • Receive, store, label, and handle incoming chemicals according to established procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and compliant chemical storage and maintenance areas.
  • Complete required records, logs, inventories, and production documentation.
  • Follow all safety procedures, personal protective equipment requirements, and environmental regulations.
  • Cross-train in hazardous waste and wastewater treatment operations.
  • Provide department coverage as needed.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and continuous improvement activities.
  • Communicate chemical or equipment concerns before they cause production delays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Makes Someone Successful Here

The people who excel in this position are dependable, organized, safety-conscious, and comfortable taking ownership of important manufacturing processes. Successful employees typically:

  • Follow detailed written procedures accurately.
  • Understand that small chemical changes can have a significant impact on production and quality.
  • Identify and respond to problems before they result in downtime.
  • Stay organized while managing several priorities.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Communicate concerns clearly and promptly.
  • Work independently without losing sight of team and production needs.
  • Handle chemicals carefully and consistently follow required safety practices.
  • Maintain dependable attendance and report to work prepared to contribute.
QualificationsRequired
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least two years of experience in manufacturing, industrial chemicals, process chemistry, wastewater treatment, laboratory operations, chemical maintenance, or a related industrial environment.
  • Strong math and measurement skills.
  • Ability to follow chemical formulas, written procedures, and detailed work instructions.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to accurately complete logs, inventories, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Dependable attendance.
  • Ability to safely perform work in an industrial chemical environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or otherwise authorized to work in the United States, as required for certain customer and government-related work.
Preferred
  • Technical education, coursework, or certification in chemistry, chemical processing, wastewater treatment, environmental science, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
  • Experience with plating or metal finishing chemistry.
