Job Summary:

Supports pathologists and pathology department. Accessions pathology consult cases and external immunohistochemistry referrals. Facilitates movement of case material and documents for pathology review or consultation. Assists pathologists with documentation of report addendums, amendments, and edits.

Job Duties:

  • Coordinates and prioritizes daily workflow in a fast-paced environment; completion of assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Answers department telephone calls, responds to emails, EPIC in-basket messages, and Microsoft Teams messages to field requestor's questions and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Receives, registers and accessions pathology consult cases and external immunohistochemistry referrals.
  • Acts as a liaison between department and clinician offices, as well as outside institutions to facilitate the sending of case material and reports as necessary for coordination of patient care.
  • Manages internal and external requests for add on pathology testing.
  • Retrieves pathology slides and paraffin blocks for add on testing, clinical trials, tumor boards, pathology review, second opinions and legal holds.
  • Requests and receives consult reports and case material from clinician offices and outside institutions.
  • Assures proper labeling of case material received from outside institutions; prepares cases for review by pathologists.
  • Assists pathologists with addendums, amendments, and edits to pathology reports.
  • Performs digital scanning of pathology consult slides and others as needed.
  • Troubleshoots case delays, reviews pathologist outstanding list and alerts pathologists of overdue cases.
  • Manages multiple worklists for timely completion of tasks, including adding tables and diagrams to cases.
  • Performs various clerical duties to include scanning of documents, data entry in various formats, writing cover letters for send out consult cases, autopsy case documentation, specialty referral, intra departmental and external case tracking and documentation, and assisting with case reassignments as needed.
  • Responsible for sorting and distributing incoming mail to the pathology department.
