How much do kennel jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for kennel in the United States is $17.67, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.18 and $19.71 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is kennel work a good career?

Kennel work involves caring for animals in a shelter, veterinary clinic, or boarding facility, requiring skills in animal handling and cleanliness. It can be physically demanding and often offers entry-level positions with limited advancement, but it provides experience for those interested in animal care careers. Job satisfaction depends on personal interest in working with animals and the work environment.

What Are Kennel Jobs?

Kennel jobs focus on the care and feeding of animals that are either waiting for new owners or are temporarily residing in the kennel. Most kennel jobs focus on dogs, but boarding facilities often take care of many other sorts of pets as well. Your duties in this job may involve cleaning cages, walking animals, grooming animals, and supporting the daily operations of the facility. Kennels can be independent, but in recent years, many of them have partnered with veterinary clinics, and some kennel attendants are also trained veterinarians or help provide medical care. Kennel jobs frequently require you to provide personalized care to animals, including monitoring them for special needs, providing certain toys, or interacting with them at particular times.

How much money can a dog kennel make?

A kennel worker's income varies based on location, experience, and the facility's size, but typically ranges from $10 to $15 per hour. Annual earnings can be around $20,000 to $30,000, with additional income possible through tips or bonuses for good performance and customer service skills.

What are kennel workers?

Kennel workers, also known as kennel attendants or kennel assistants, are professionals responsible for the care and well-being of animals, typically dogs and cats, housed in boarding kennels, animal shelters, or veterinary clinics. Their duties include feeding, exercising, cleaning enclosures, monitoring animal health, and providing basic grooming. Kennel workers also interact with pet owners and assist with check-ins and check-outs. They play a vital role in ensuring a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for animals during their stay.

What are some common challenges faced by kennel staff and how can they be addressed?

Kennel staff often encounter challenges such as managing animals with a variety of temperaments, handling cleaning and sanitation under time constraints, and communicating effectively with pet owners about their pets’ needs. Building strong animal handling skills, practicing patience, and following strict hygiene protocols are essential. Additionally, teamwork and clear communication with both colleagues and pet owners help create a safe, supportive environment for the animals and staff alike.

What is the difference between Kennel vs Pet Care Assistant?

AspectKennelPet Care Assistant
CertificationsBasic animal care knowledge, sometimes certifications in pet first aidSimilar certifications, often including pet first aid and customer service
Work EnvironmentAnimal boarding facilities, kennels, sheltersPet stores, veterinary clinics, pet grooming salons
Employer & IndustryAnimal care facilities, kennels, sheltersPet stores, veterinary clinics, pet grooming businesses

Both roles involve caring for animals, but a Kennel typically focuses on boarding and sheltering animals, while a Pet Care Assistant often provides broader pet care services in retail or clinical settings. The skills and certifications overlap, making them related but distinct roles within the pet industry.

How can I work with animals but not be a vet?

A kennel worker or animal caretaker can work with animals by feeding, cleaning, and providing basic care in kennels or shelters. These roles often require knowledge of animal behavior and may benefit from certifications like pet first aid, but do not require veterinary degrees. They typically involve hands-on animal handling and maintaining a clean environment.

What do you need to work in a kennel?

To work in a kennel, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, basic knowledge of animal care, and the ability to handle animals safely. Good communication skills, physical stamina, and sometimes certification in pet first aid are also beneficial. Prior experience with animals can be advantageous but is not always required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Kennel Attendant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kennel Attendant, you need basic animal care knowledge, attention to hygiene, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with animal handling equipment, feeding schedules, and cleaning protocols is typically required, and some employers may seek certification in animal care or first aid. Strong observation skills, patience, and effective communication with pet owners and team members help you stand out in this position. These skills ensure the well-being of animals and contribute to a safe, clean, and supportive kennel environment.
