Job description

SUMMARY

Ajax Building Company is seeking a motivated Junior Estimator to support the development of accurate and competitive cost estimates for complex commercial construction projects. This role is an entry point into our estimating team, offering hands-on experience in quantity takeoffs, cost analysis,  and estimate development while learning and working within Ajax's established estimating systems and tools .

The Junior Estimator reports to and is directly accountable to the Chief Estimator. This role will assist in analyzing drawings and specifications, compiling cost data, and supporting the overall estimating process-building a strong foundation in construction pricing, cost control, and project planning.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Review drawings, specifications, and other project documents to support estimate development 

  • Perform quantity takeoffs and assist in preparing detailed cost estimates 

  • Compile and analyze data from various sources, including historical cost data, material pricing, and internal cost data 

  • Maintain organized backup documentation for all estimates 

  • Support estimate updates, revisions, and cost comparisons throughout the preconstruction process 

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and assist in scope review and clarification 

  • Perform additional assignments as needed to support the estimating team 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent technical training) 
  • Internship or prior exposure to construction or estimating preferred 
  • Basic understanding of construction divisions, methods, materials, and cost drivers 
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications 


Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) required

  • Preferred: Experience with On-Screen Takeoff (OST) or similar, Bluebeam and/or Adobe, DESTINI Estimator (or similar), EarthWorks 

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills 
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills 

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
