Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Structural Designer provides advanced drafting and design support for marine and heavy civil structure projects, including bulkheads, dolphins, trestles, bridges, piers, and terminals.

This role is responsible for preparing detailed design drawings, assisting engineers in developing design packages, and ensuring all deliverables meet Orion's quality standards. The Senior Structural Designer collaborates closely with engineers and project managers to produce accurate, constructible, and professional drawings that support efficient field execution.

The ideal candidate has a strong technical background, attention to detail, and proven experience in structural design for marine or heavy civil projects.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide senior-level drafting and design support for marine and heavy civil structure projects.
  • Prepare plans, sections, elevations, and detailed construction drawings using AutoCAD and related software.
  • Develop 3D models of existing and new structures for design and coordination purposes.
  • Work closely with engineers and project managers to ensure design intent and project requirements are achieved.
  • Create visualization aids (sketches, renderings, or diagrams) to support concept development and client presentations.
  • Identify geometric constraints and proactively communicate design conflicts or field conditions.
  • Coordinate drawing production with other disciplines to ensure design integration and consistency.
  • Review and perform quality checks on drawings and layouts prepared by junior designers or technicians.
  • Maintain consistent file organization, drawing standards, and layer management according to company guidelines.
  • Support the development of as-built drawings and record documentation using field data or redlines.
  • Participate in virtual coordination meetings and provide design input on constructability.
  • Assist with proposal graphics, concept layouts, and visualizations as needed.
  • Provide mentorship and drafting guidance to junior staff when required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • 8+ years of experience in structural design for marine, bridge, or heavy civil projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD (2D and 3D) and familiarity with Revit or Civil 3D preferred.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Teams, and other collaborative platforms.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, materials, and field coordination.
  • Ability to interpret engineering sketches, technical notes, and design calculations.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a remote, multidisciplinary team.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple design tasks independently.
  • Working knowledge of marine structures, including piles, caps, decks, fenders, and mooring systems.
