Junior Software information

What does a junior software engineer do?

A Junior Software Engineer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of senior team members. They typically write and review code, fix bugs, and collaborate with other engineers to implement new features or improve existing ones. Junior Software Engineers are also expected to learn and adapt to new technologies, follow best coding practices, and participate in code reviews. Their role is essential in supporting project development and gaining hands-on experience to advance their careers.

What are some common challenges faced by junior software engineers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world development teams?

Junior Software Engineers often find that real-world development involves more complex codebases, collaborative workflows, and the use of industry-standard tools, which can be quite different from academic projects. Adapting to agile methodologies, participating in code reviews, and learning to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams are typical challenges. Additionally, juniors may need to quickly get up to speed with version control systems and continuous integration tools, all while balancing learning with delivering work on tight deadlines. Supportive mentors and structured onboarding can help ease this transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic knowledge of databases, and exposure to IDEs and debugging tools are commonly required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively help set you apart in this entry-level position. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively contributing to development projects, adapting to evolving technologies, and supporting team goals.

Job description

Junior Software Developer [NO RELOCATION]

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE NEEDING TO RELOCATE. WE ARE ONLY HIRING IN PHOENIX.

Phoenix, AZ — onsite · $60,000–$80,000

BusinessRate turns public customer reviews into scores and rankings for local businesses. We collect review data at scale, score each business, rank it against its local competitors, and recognize the top performers in their market.

We're profitable and growing, with an engineering team of four. Everything — the data pipelines, the web applications, the payment flows, the internal tooling, the infrastructure — is built and maintained in house.

The role

You'd be writing code day to day, with your pull requests reviewed carefully and someone senior on hand when you get stuck. We're a small team, so you won't be handed a narrow slice of the product and left there — you'll see how the whole thing fits together, and you'll get more ownership as you show you're ready for it.

The work is genuinely interesting. The data side involves large partitioned tables, queries that need to stay fast as volumes grow, and pipelines processing substantial amounts of data. There's also a customer-facing web application, payment flows, and internal dashboards, all of which need to be reliable.

We're looking for someone who wants to get good at this, not just someone who can already do it.

What you'll do

- Build and maintain backend services and APIs, with support on the design decisions

- Work on our Next.js and tRPC frontends — customer-facing pages and internal dashboards

- Write SQL against large datasets and learn what makes queries fast or slow

- Fix bugs and ship improvements across the product

- Have your pull requests reviewed carefully, and start reviewing others' as you grow

- Take smaller projects from idea through to production

What we're looking for

You should have:

- Working knowledge of TypeScript and Node.js, and something real you've built with them — a job, an internship, a personal project you can walk us through

- Familiarity with SQL and relational databases; you don't need to know how to optimize a query against a partitioned table yet, but you should want to learn

- Experience building with React, ideally Next.js

- Comfort with AI-assisted development tools alongside solid engineering practices — we use them regularly and expect the same care with code written that way

- A willingness to ask questions early rather than disappear for three days

Nice to have:

- tRPC, Fastify, or similar typed API layers

- Docker and modern deployment pipelines (we use Render)

- Stripe or other payments experience

- Any exposure to data pipelines or ETL

- A CS degree, a bootcamp, or no formal background at all — we care about what you can do

Compensation and process

Base salary is $60,000–$80,000, depending on experience.

Health insurance included. This role is onsite in the Phoenix area.

Our process is four steps: an intro call, a technical conversation, an onsite visit, and an offer.

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE NEEDING TO RELOCATE. WE ARE ONLY HIRING IN PHOENIX.
