ABOUT THE ROLE

Ferguson Electric’s Electrical Engineer III is a position for engineers who are self-sufficient in design and engineering tasks. This position will lead the electrical system design, engineering, commissioning and construction efforts for commercial and industrial projects, including healthcare, education, research, commercial facilities, and utilities. This role involves supporting and leading project design teams, developing innovative electrical solutions, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. The Electrical Engineer III role will mentor junior staff, manage project deliverables, and contribute to the company’s commitment to quality, safety, and client satisfaction while upholding Ferguson Electric’s core values.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Electrical Systems Design:
    • Lead the design of electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, and communication systems, for commercial, industrial, and utility projects.
    • Develop project design goals, specifications, and strategies to meet client requirements and project objectives.
    • Lead and participate in quality control reviews of engineering documents to learn about accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
    • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes (e.g., NFPA, IEEE) and industry standards.
  • Electrical Systems Analysis and Field Support:
    • Specify electrical equipment, components, and materials, ensuring compatibility with project needs and budgets under supervision.
    • Lead and perform engineering studies, such as load analysis, short-circuit, and coordination and arc flash, using tools like SKM or Easypower with no supervision.
    • Review of submittals, shop drawings, and other construction documents to ensure they are meeting the project requirements.
    • Develop relay, transformer, breaker and battery testing plans and reports.
    • Develop relay programs.
    • Support service technicians with troubleshooting customer electrical system problems.
  • Project Leadership:
    • Manage and coordinate electrical engineering aspects of projects, ensuring adherence to budgets, schedules, and quality standards.
    • Lead or participate in project team and client meetings to align project scope, progress, and deliverables.
    • Oversee the preparation of construction documents, including detailed drawings and specifications.
  • Mentorship and Supervision:
    • Guide and mentor junior engineers and drafters in the execution of design tasks and production of drawings.
    • Conduct quality control reviews of engineering documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  • Site Engagement:
    • Lead or participate in site visits to verify existing conditions, monitor construction progress, and ensure compliance with design specifications.
    • Lead or participate in construction meetings and provide technical guidance to field teams and subcontractors.
    • Perform physical walk-throughs of sites as needed to assess conditions and resolve issues.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Develop strategies to improve design quality, coordination, and efficiency in production efforts.
    • Incorporate renewable and sustainable design practices where applicable to enhance project outcomes.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with project managers, architects, and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated and coordinated project delivery.
    • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to address technical and project-related concerns.

ABOUT YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (Electrical Systems focus) from an ABET-accredited program required.
    • 7+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on commercial or industrial projects.
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred; Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required if not PE-licensed or additional 10 years of experience directly related to the job responsibilities.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for documentation and reporting.
    • Proficiency in drawing software (e.g. Revit and AutoCAD) and electrical analysis software (e.g., SKM, Easypower,) is required.
    • Ability to design power distribution, lighting, and communication systems per NEC, IEEE and other relevant codes is required.
    • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
    • Good understanding and knowledge of electrical system installation methods and standards.
    • Exposure to renewable energy systems or sustainable design practices is a plus.
