Job description

The Production Engineer 4 is responsible for the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes, fabrication and assembly, cost reduction initiatives, processing of engineering changes, and introduction of new products. Also provides guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, technicians and operations support staff. Capable of development of project plans, execution of capital projects and significant activities requiring a multi-functional team. The Production Engineer (PE) is a team player, results oriented, dedicated to excellence and strong work ethics.

Position Responsibilities may include:

  • Establish continuous improvement goals and execute action plans.
  • Utilize proven lean manufacturing abilities to identify opportunities for cost reduction, increased quality, workflow improvements, estimating, project analysis, technology development and core manufacturing skill set.
  • Develop and support DOE (Design of experiments), 8D (Eight Disciplines of team-oriented problem-solving), FMEA (Failure Mode & Effects Analysis), 6 Sigma and DFM (Design for Manufacturing) analysis and implementation of Kaizen activities.
  • Work with Design Engineers to revise, and sustain HVAC product, tooling and machine designs utilizing knowledge of mechanical engineering principles; provide manufacturing technical resource to Design Project teams.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, technicians, and support staff.
  • Develop and manage project schedules related to existing product launches or design modifications.
  • Document product designs by preparing cost analysis, review drawings, and engineering change requests.
  • Assist other team members in redesigning internal components to improve overall long-term system quality, improve efficiency and reduce cost.
  • Develop engineering solutions to product related issues through problem solving and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Participate on cross functional teams to launch product modifications, resolve issues, and support product improvements.
  • Plans medium to large projects and release of new processes, including obtaining quotes, preparing Capital Approval Requests (CAR), issue requisitions and PO’s.
  • Oversees CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) development until projects full implementation.
  • Process developer including new technology and long-range planning for process families and systems.
  • Speaks for the department and presents status and strategy information across departments.
  • Coordinate project work internally with the department and externally with other departments to ensure on-time completion of projects within budget. Provide Guidance to Junior PE’s & techs on other projects.
  • Develop suppliers for manufacturing equipment, develop key suppliers, create an environment of continuous improvement in equipment UPTIME, EFFICIENCY & QUALITY.
  • Perform additional projects/duties to support ongoing business needs.

Nature & Scope:

  • Is recognized as a subject matter expert in job area.
  • Manages large projects or processes with limited oversight from manager. 
  • Coaches, reviews, and delegates work to lower-level professionals.
  • Problems faced are difficult and often complex.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Extensive understanding and knowledge of manufacturing engineering theory, processes, and practice.
  • Lean manufacturing concepts - Kaizen, value stream mapping, Kanban, demand flow technology; line balancing & time studies.
  • Highly Skilled in two or more of the following areas - fabrication/stamping of aluminum or steel parts, tooling, molding, finishing, tubing fabrication, paint, assembly/manufacturing processes, and/or controls is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of specifications and standards used in the HVAC industry.
  • Expert on core manufacturing documentation and all aspects of manufacturing in a high-volume environment and engineering change processes.
  • Proven capability/experience with PFMEAs, Process Control Plans, Process Flow Diagrams, DFA/DFM, and operator instructions, engineering change processes.
  • Proven capability to handle multiple projects and capable to coach technicians and others on the proper manufacturing core skills.
  • Software skills including MS Office Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, Mapics, 3D Model software.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills and compliance oriented and attention to detail.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient project management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal & collaboration skills and ability to work with teams.
  • Recognized expert in technical disciplines within the processes.
  • Knowledge of whole manufacturing systems including processes and product portfolio.
  • Acknowledged expert in multiple technical disciplines.
  • Excellent communicator (both verbal and written) with the ability to present status and strategy information across departments and on multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to apply good judgement, strong work ethics and integrity on the job.

Competency:

Experience:

  • 9-11 years minimum experience in a production/manufacturing engineer role with documented examples of process design and implementation across multiple product families in assembly HVAC environment preferred, or automotive, appliance industry.

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree - Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or Systems Engineering required.
  • MS preferred
  • Six Sigma certification preferred

People Management: No

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

  • Must be able to perform essential responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working from a computer.
  • Travel requirement of up to 20% (for Equipment Run off).
  • Standing, walking, bending, stooping, etc. to move, view and transfer product.
  • May be required to lift, carry, and/or move up to 40lbs.
  • High volume manufacturing environment with forklift traffic - PPE required.
  • May have higher noise volume in areas – hearing protection required.
