How much do geology companies jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for geology companies in the United States is $77,030.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $56,000.00 and $93,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges geologists face when working for geology companies, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Geologists working for geology companies often encounter challenges such as conducting fieldwork in remote or harsh environments, interpreting complex geological data, and adapting to changing project requirements. New hires can prepare by developing strong problem-solving skills, becoming proficient with geospatial and mapping software, and maintaining flexibility in their work approach. Additionally, effective communication and teamwork are essential, as geologists frequently collaborate with engineers, environmental scientists, and other specialists to achieve project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a geology company, and why are they important?

To thrive in a geology company, you need a solid background in earth sciences, geologic mapping, and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in geology or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, remote sensing tools, and industry-standard modeling systems is commonly required, and certifications like Professional Geologist (PG) can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help professionals excel when collaborating on projects and presenting findings. These competencies ensure accurate data interpretation, regulatory compliance, and successful project outcomes in exploration and environmental work.

What companies do geologists work for?

Geologists work for a variety of companies including oil and gas corporations, mining firms, environmental consulting agencies, government agencies, and engineering firms. They often analyze geological data, conduct fieldwork, and use tools like GIS software, with many positions requiring relevant certifications and field experience.

What is the difference between Geology Companies vs Geoscientists?

AspectGeology CompaniesGeoscientists
CredentialsCompany-wide expertise, often hiring geologists with degrees in geology or earth sciencesIndividual professionals with degrees in geology, earth sciences, or related fields, often licensed or certified
Work EnvironmentCorporate offices, field sites, laboratories, exploration areasFieldwork, research, data analysis, consulting roles
Industry UsageOrganizations providing geological services, exploration, consulting, resource extractionProfessionals working within or for these companies, conducting geological assessments

In summary, geology companies are organizations that employ geoscientists to perform geological work. Geoscientists are the professionals with expertise and credentials who carry out the tasks within these companies. Understanding this distinction helps clarify the roles and search intent related to geological careers and services.

Is there a high demand for geologists?

The demand for geologists remains steady due to ongoing needs in natural resource exploration, environmental assessment, and hazard mitigation. Employment opportunities are often influenced by the energy, mining, and environmental sectors, with a requirement for strong analytical skills and fieldwork experience.

What are geology companies?

Geology companies are businesses that specialize in the study and application of earth sciences. They provide services such as mineral exploration, environmental assessments, geotechnical analysis, and resource management. These companies employ geologists and other experts to analyze soil, rocks, minerals, and groundwater to support industries like mining, construction, oil and gas, and environmental consulting. Their work helps to ensure safe construction, responsible resource extraction, and compliance with environmental regulations.

What careers can you do with geology?

A degree in geology can lead to careers such as geologist, environmental consultant, petroleum engineer, mining analyst, or hydrogeologist. These roles often involve fieldwork, data analysis, and the use of specialized tools like GIS software and core sampling equipment. Many positions require relevant certifications and a strong understanding of earth processes and environmental regulations.

Senior Geologist

Terra AI

Redwood City, CA โ€ข On-site

$185K - $250K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 17 days ago

Job description

Terra AI is building a new category at the intersection of artificial intelligence, geoscience, and critical resource development.
As global demand for copper, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, geothermal energy, and other strategic resources accelerates, the mining and subsurface industries face a growing challenge: traditional exploration methods remain slow, expensive, and highly uncertain. Terra AI was founded to help solve this problem by redefining how critical resources are discovered, evaluated, and developed.
By combining advanced machine learning, probabilistic modeling, and deep geoscience expertise, Terra AI helps exploration and mining companies make faster, more informed subsurface decisions with greater confidence and capital efficiency. The company’s platform integrates geological, geophysical, and drilling data into intelligent systems designed to improve targeting accuracy, accelerate discovery timelines, and reduce exploration risk.
Backed by leading investors including Khosla Ventures and working alongside strategic industry partners including Rio Tinto, Ero Copper, and Ramaco Resources, Terra AI is emerging as one of the more closely watched AI-native companies operating within the mining and critical minerals sector.
Terra AI’s mission is to define the new global standard for data-driven critical resource development — breaking the cost and time curve required to support electrification, energy security, and the global energy transition.
The company operates with a strong partnership mentality, combining technical rigor, candid communication, continual learning, and environmental stewardship to help modern exploration teams solve some of the world’s most important resource challenges.

Role

We are seeking a Senior Geologist to help lead geological interpretation and mineral systems modeling efforts that support Terra AI’s exploration workflows. In this role, you will work closely with geologists, geophysicists, and machine learning engineers to integrate complex geological datasets into modern exploration models supporting critical minerals discovery.

  • Interpret and integrate geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets across multiple scales

  • Build robust mineral systems and exploration models supporting probabilistic targeting workflows

  • Support geological feature engineering and modern computational exploration workflows

  • QA/QC historical and modern exploration datasets to improve modeling confidence

  • Collaborate closely with internal and external technical teams across geology, geophysics, and engineering

  • Produce technical reports, visualizations, and exploration recommendations for global projects

  • Provide geological expertise to support the automation and improvement of exploration workflows

Qualifications

  • Experience in economic geology, mineral exploration, or mine development

  • Strong experience in critical minerals and base metals geology

  • Proficiency with GIS and 3D geological modeling software

  • Experience integrating geological and exploration datasets into cohesive exploration models

  • Strong understanding of geochemistry and mineralization systems

  • Exposure to computational geology, geostatistics, remote sensing, or AI-enabled exploration workflows is considered beneficial

Candidates from both traditional exploration and emerging computational geology environments are encouraged to apply.

We recognize that exceptional candidates may come from a variety of professional, technical, and industry backgrounds. If your experience aligns closely with the spirit of the role, we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every listed qualification.

Compensation

$185,000- $250,000 + Equity
In accordance with California law, Terra AI provides a good faith base salary range for roles that may be performed in California. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, skills, and market considerations. In addition to base salary, total compensation may include performance bonus opportunities, equity participation, and a comprehensive benefits package.

Terra AI is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.
