What are Junior MES Developers?

Junior MES Developers are entry-level professionals who work with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) to help monitor, control, and optimize manufacturing processes on the shop floor. They typically assist in developing, configuring, and maintaining MES software solutions, supporting production teams, and integrating MES with other business systems like ERP. Junior MES Developers often work under the guidance of senior developers or engineers, learning industry standards and best practices while gaining hands-on experience in manufacturing IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior MES Developers when integrating MES solutions with existing manufacturing systems?

Junior MES Developers often face challenges when integrating new MES solutions with legacy equipment and software, as manufacturing environments typically include a mix of old and new technologies. Navigating different communication protocols, ensuring data consistency, and minimizing production downtime during integration are common hurdles. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including automation engineers and IT specialists, is essential to troubleshoot issues and maintain smooth operations. By proactively seeking mentorship and documentation, junior developers can build their expertise and contribute effectively to successful MES deployments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior MES Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior MES Developer, you need a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, programming languages (like C#, .NET, or Java), and a relevant degree in computer science, engineering, or similar fields. Familiarity with MES platforms (such as Siemens Opcenter or Wonderware), SQL databases, and possibly certifications in MES or automation technologies are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and troubleshoot system issues. These skills are crucial for efficiently developing, maintaining, and optimizing MES solutions that ensure seamless production operations.

Job Summary:

B&A is seeking a SAP Manufacturing MES / Solumina Integration Lead - Functional Managing Consultant to support a federal government client operating within a classified environment. This role is responsible for leading the functional design, governance, and sustainment of the integration between SAP - specifically the Production Planning (PP) and Quality Management (QM) modules - and the Solumina Manufacturing Execution System (MES) platform. The ideal candidate brings deep functional expertise in SAP manufacturing processes, direct hands-on experience with Solumina MES, and the leadership capability to manage integration workstreams and coordinate across functional, technical, and operations teams in a highly secure defense manufacturing environment

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the functional integration lead for the SAP - Manufacturing Execution System (MES) / Solumina interface, defining the end-to-end integration architecture, data flows, and process alignment between SAP PP/QM and the Solumina MES platform
  • Lead requirements-gathering workshops and solution design sessions with federal manufacturing, engineering, IT, and operations stakeholders to document integration requirements and establish functional specifications
  • Design and govern the bidirectional data exchange between SAP and Solumina including work order release and confirmation, labor and material backflushing, quality inspection results, and shop floor status updates
  • Manage the functional integration workstream across the full project lifecycle - from design and build through testing, cutover, and post-go-live stabilization - while providing oversight and guidance to junior consultants
  • Collaborate with SAP technical consultants and Solumina system administrators to translate functional integration requirements into interface specifications, middleware mappings, and data transformation rules
  • Define and execute integration testing strategies including unit testing, string testing, and end-to-end scenario testing across the SAP - MES boundary
  • Identify and resolve functional integration gaps, data quality issues, and process misalignments between SAP and Solumina during design, testing, and production operations
  • Develop and maintain functional integration design documents, interface specifications, test scripts, cutover runbooks, and end-user training materials
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on SAP - MES integration best practices, advising on system enhancements, interface performance, and release update impacts on the integration landscape
  • Ensure all integration solutions remain compliant with federal defense manufacturing standards, cybersecurity requirements, and security protocols applicable to the classified operating environment

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in SAP Manufacturing configuration and implementation with demonstrated experience leading SAP - MES integration efforts
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct experience working with Solumina MES (iBase-t) in a configuration, integration, or functional lead capacity
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SAP PP and QM configuration and the functional design of bidirectional SAP - MES data exchange including work order management, shop floor confirmations, and quality results transfer
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field.

Required Skills:

  • Deep functional knowledge of SAP Production Planning (PP) and Quality Management (QM) including production orders, BOMs, routings, work centers, inspection lots, and shop floor control processes
  • Hands-on experience designing and managing SAP - MES integration solutions, including bidirectional data flows for work order management, labor/material confirmations, and quality results transfer
  • Working knowledge of Solumina MES (iBase-t) including work instruction management, shop floor traveler configuration, labor tracking, and nonconformance (NCR) workflows
  • Experience leading functional integration workstreams on complex SAP programs involving third-party manufacturing or execution systems
  • Ability to bridge functional and technical teams by translating business process requirements into interface specifications, data mapping documents, and middleware configuration guidance
  • Strong understanding of middleware and integration technologies (e.g., SAP PI/PO, SAP Integration Suite, MuleSoft, or equivalent) as they apply to SAP - MES data exchange
  • Proficiency in developing functional integration design documents, interface specifications, test scripts, and cutover runbooks
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills with the ability to convey complex integration concepts to manufacturing operations, engineering, IT, and senior program leadership
  • Experience working within federal, defense, or classified manufacturing environments with adherence to strict cybersecurity and operational security protocols

Desired Skills:

  • SAP Certified Application Associate - SAP S/4HANA Manufacturing or SAP PP/QM certification
  • Experience with SAP Manufacturing Execution (SAP ME) or SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud (DMC) as a comparison or migration reference to Solumina
  • Familiarity with IIBA-compliant integration architecture documentation standards and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches used in defense programs
  • Knowledge of nuclear or defense manufacturing compliance requirements applicable to DOE national laboratory or weapons complex environments, including configuration management and traceability requirements
  • Experience supporting Agile or SAFe delivery methodologies within federal IT programs
  • Prior experience on DOE, DOD, or other federal agency SAP - MES integration programs

Security Clearance:

  •  Active Top Secret (TS) or DOE Q clearance is required; eligibility for SCI access may be required depending on program assignment
