What does a junior custodian do?

A Junior Custodian is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in buildings such as schools, offices, or public facilities. Typical tasks include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, emptying trash cans, cleaning restrooms, and replenishing supplies. They may also assist with minor repairs, moving furniture, and ensuring that all areas are safe and sanitary. Junior Custodians often work under the supervision of a head custodian or facility manager and follow established cleaning schedules and protocols.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a junior custodian?

To thrive as a Junior Custodian, you need basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and safety data sheets (SDS) is typically required, and OSHA training can be beneficial. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment, which is crucial for the health and satisfaction of building occupants.

What are common challenges faced by junior custodians, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Custodians often encounter challenges such as managing time efficiently to complete all assigned cleaning tasks during a shift, adapting to different cleaning protocols for various areas, and handling potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals safely. To overcome these challenges, custodians should prioritize tasks based on urgency and frequency, follow established safety procedures, and seek guidance from experienced team members when unsure. Staying organized, communicating effectively with supervisors, and participating in ongoing training can also help junior custodians succeed and grow within their role.
