Job description

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to oversee core financial operations within our steel manufacturing and distribution environment. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong technical accounting skills and manufacturing cost accounting experience. You’ll be accountable for managing daily accounting functions, monthly close, job costing accuracy, internal controls, and supporting external audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes; prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements
  • Maintain accuracy of the general ledger, inventory valuation, and standard costing system
  • Manage Accounts Payable, Inventory, and fixed asset tracking processes
  • Analyze job costs, variances, and overhead allocations; make recommendations to improve profitability
  • Develop and enforce internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure GAAP compliance
  • Collaborate with operations, purchasing, and production teams to align financial performance with plant activities
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly management reports, including KPIs and financial analysis
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
  • Support audits, including financial statement, tax, and compliance audits
  • Supervise or mentor junior accounting staff as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a manufacturing or industrial setting or public accounting
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, job costing, inventory accounting, and financial reporting
  • High proficiency in Excel and ERP systems
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, lead projects, and collaborate cross-functionally
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • CPA or progress toward CPA (not required)
  • Experience in steel or industrial manufacturing
  • Prior experience implementing or improving costing systems
