Junior Computer Vision information

What is a junior computer vision?

Junior Computer Vision Engineers are entry-level professionals who work on developing and implementing algorithms that allow computers to interpret and process visual information from the world, such as images and videos. They typically assist in building models for tasks like object detection, image classification, and facial recognition. These engineers often work under the guidance of senior team members, helping with data preprocessing, model training, and performance evaluation. The role requires a foundation in programming, mathematics, and machine learning, as well as familiarity with libraries like OpenCV or TensorFlow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior computer vision?

To thrive as a Junior Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, programming (especially Python or C++), and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), OpenCV, and experience working with image processing libraries are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills. These competencies are crucial for developing accurate computer vision models and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by junior computer vision engineers in their first year on the job?

Junior Computer Vision engineers often encounter challenges such as bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application, dealing with large and noisy datasets, and optimizing models for performance and accuracy. They may also need to quickly learn new frameworks or libraries and adapt to the fast-paced development cycles typical in tech environments. Collaboration with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams is essential, so developing strong communication skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams is key to success.

What is the difference between Junior Computer Vision vs Junior Machine Learning Engineer?

AspectJunior Computer VisionJunior Machine Learning Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS, Electrical Engineering, or related; knowledge of image processingBachelor's in CS, Data Science, or related; understanding of algorithms and data modeling
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, AI startups focusing on image/video analysisTech firms, startups, or research centers working on predictive models and data pipelines
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries like robotics, surveillance, autonomous vehiclesApplied across finance, healthcare, e-commerce, and tech sectors

Junior Computer Vision roles focus on developing algorithms for image and video analysis, often requiring knowledge of computer vision libraries. Junior Machine Learning Engineers work on building predictive models across various data types. While both roles require programming skills and foundational knowledge of algorithms, their focus areas differ, with computer vision emphasizing visual data and machine learning covering broader data applications.

Job description

Title:

Junior Computer Engineer

KBR is seeking a Junior Computer Engineer to support advanced communications and cyber research efforts. In this role, you will contribute to the design, development, integration, and evaluation of systems used to analyze modern communications technologies. You will work with experienced engineers across hardware, software, networking, RF, and embedded technologies while building hands-on experience with laboratory systems and prototype capabilities.

The ideal candidate has a solid engineering foundation, strong curiosity, and an interest in hands-on technical problem solving. This position requires the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies, follow technical direction, contribute to engineering tasks, and communicate findings clearly to the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of laboratory architectures for communications research, testing, and evaluation.
  • Research communications technologies, hardware platforms, networking technologies, and related technical capabilities.
  • Assist with integrating software-defined radios, communications hardware, embedded systems, networking equipment, and computing platforms into technical solutions.
  • Contribute to system architecture development, interface definition, integration planning, and technical implementation activities.
  • Support evaluation of communications protocols, waveform implementations, system interoperability, and end-to-end system performance.
  • Support laboratory development activities including hardware selection, capability planning, system design, and technical trade studies under engineering guidance.
  • Perform technical analysis of communications systems and supporting technologies.
  • Assist with system testing, experimentation, validation, and technical assessments.
  • Document technical findings and communicate results to engineering teams and government stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • 0-3 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience with networking concepts, network protocols, or distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with hardware/software interfaces or system integration activities.
  • Ability to conduct technical research and evaluate unfamiliar technologies.
  • Experience using at least one programming or scripting language such as Python, C, C++, or a similar language.
  • Ability to read technical documentation and rapidly learn unfamiliar technologies.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • Exposure to software-defined radio platforms such as Ettus USRP, BladeRF, HackRF, LimeSDR, or similar technologies.
  • Exposure to laboratory, prototype, research, or test environments.
  • Exposure to RF communications systems, wireless technologies, tactical communications systems, satellite communications systems, or networking technologies.
  • Familiarity with communications protocols, waveform technologies, or communications architectures.
  • Familiarity with digital signal processing concepts or communications theory.
  • Exposure to embedded systems, FPGA-based systems, or custom hardware platforms.
  • Exposure to RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, vector signal analyzers, or similar equipment.

Basic Compensation:

$85,000 - $110,000 (For Ohio Only)

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
