How much do junior civil engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for junior civil engineering in the United States is $71,799.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48,500.00 and $80,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical responsibilities and daily tasks of a Junior Civil Engineer?

Junior Civil Engineers frequently assist senior engineers with site inspections, drafting technical drawings, preparing project documentation, and performing basic calculations for structures or infrastructures. Their days often involve collaborating with cross-functional teams including architects, contractors, and surveyors, as well as performing on-site data collection and analysis. It's common for Junior Civil Engineers to split time between office-based design work and field visits to monitor progress or quality. This varied routine provides great learning opportunities and exposure to multiple aspects of civil engineering projects, making the role ideal for those eager to develop a broad technical skill set and gain hands-on experience early in their career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Junior Civil Engineering position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Civil Engineer, you need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field and foundational skills in structural analysis, construction materials, and site surveying. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D), basic project management tools, and safety regulations is highly valuable. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate project execution, smooth collaboration with senior engineers, and the ability to contribute positively to complex construction projects.

Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

Junior civil engineers typically earn lower salaries, with most annual incomes ranging from $50,000 to $70,000. Earning $500,000 usually requires many years of experience, advanced roles such as senior engineer or project manager, or working on large-scale infrastructure projects in high-paying regions. Certifications, specialized skills, and leadership positions can significantly increase earning potential over time.

What do junior civil engineers do?

Junior civil engineers assist in designing, planning, and overseeing construction projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings. They perform tasks like preparing reports, conducting site inspections, and using engineering software, often under the supervision of senior engineers. Strong technical skills and knowledge of safety standards are essential for this role.

What is a Junior Civil Engineering job?

A Junior Civil Engineering job is an entry-level position where recent graduates or early-career professionals assist in planning, designing, and overseeing construction projects. They work under the supervision of senior engineers, helping with site inspections, drafting plans, preparing reports, and ensuring projects meet safety and regulatory standards. This role provides hands-on experience in structural, transportation, geotechnical, or environmental engineering. It is a crucial step for gaining practical skills and working toward professional licensure.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior civil engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and specialized skills in project management or infrastructure design can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-cost regions or large projects. Such roles often require leadership responsibilities, advanced degrees, and a strong track record of successful project delivery.

Can I get a civil engineering job with no experience?

Junior civil engineering positions often require some related education or internships, but entry-level roles may be available to candidates with little to no professional experience if they demonstrate relevant skills, such as knowledge of CAD software or basic construction principles. Gaining certifications or completing internships can improve chances of employment in this field. Employers typically look for a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn on the job.
