What are Jewish Social Services?

Jewish Social Services are organizations and programs that provide a range of support and assistance to individuals and families within the Jewish community, as well as the broader public. These services often include counseling, financial aid, food assistance, elder care, refugee resettlement, and community programming. The goal is to uphold Jewish values of compassion and social justice while helping those in need improve their quality of life. Jewish Social Service agencies work with people of all backgrounds and often collaborate with other community organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jewish Social Service professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Jewish Social Service professional, you need a background in social work, counseling, or a related human services field, often supported by a relevant degree and licensure. Familiarity with case management software, community resource databases, and sometimes Jewish communal service certifications is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to build trust with diverse clients distinguish outstanding professionals in this field. These competencies are essential for effectively supporting individuals and families, respecting cultural nuances, and promoting community well-being.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Jewish Social Services, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Jewish Social Services often encounter challenges such as serving a diverse community with varying religious observance levels, navigating cultural sensitivities, and addressing complex social issues like poverty, elder care, or immigrant integration. Collaboration and open communication with colleagues and community leaders are essential for understanding client needs and providing tailored support. Ongoing training in cultural competency and trauma-informed care, as well as participating in inter-agency networks, can help staff effectively address these challenges and ensure inclusive, respectful service delivery.

  • Represent JSS externally at events and in the community

Leadership & Strategy

  • Supervise communications and development staff and/or contractors
  • Collaborate with program teams to elevate impact stories
  • Align fundraising and communications into a unified annual plan

  • Experience managing digital communications (social media, email, website)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and think strategically
  • Comfort engaging with donors, leadership, and community partners

Bonus Points If You Have

  • Experience in a nonprofit or human services setting
  • Event planning experience
  • Experience supervising staff or managing external vendors

Compensation & Details

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Salary: $75,000
