Employer & Industry UsageIT firms, financial institutions, healthcare, government agenciesSoftware development companies, tech startups, enterprise IT

Java Systems Analysts focus on analyzing and designing system solutions, working closely with stakeholders to gather requirements. Java Developers primarily write and maintain Java code to build applications. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but their daily tasks and focus differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java Systems Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Systems Analyst, you need strong programming skills in Java, solid understanding of systems analysis, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and experience with databases and frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate are typically required. Analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities set exceptional analysts apart. These skills ensure accurate system requirements gathering, efficient solution design, and seamless collaboration with technical and business stakeholders.

Is SOC an entry-level job?

A Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst role is typically not entry-level; it usually requires some experience in cybersecurity, network monitoring, or related fields. Entry-level positions in cybersecurity may include roles like SOC analyst trainees or junior analysts, but more advanced SOC positions often require certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or CISSP and prior experience.

How does a Java Systems Analyst typically collaborate with development and QA teams during a project lifecycle?

A Java Systems Analyst works closely with both development and QA teams to ensure that business requirements are accurately translated into technical solutions. They often facilitate communication by clarifying system specifications, reviewing code or design documents, and participating in regular meetings to track project progress. During the testing phase, Java Systems Analysts help troubleshoot issues, provide context for bug resolution, and ensure that final deliverables meet the intended functionality. This collaborative approach is essential for delivering robust and scalable Java-based systems that align with organizational goals.

Are systems analysts in high demand?

Systems analysts, including Java Systems Analysts, are in high demand due to the ongoing need for technology integration and system improvements across industries. Strong skills in programming, systems design, and certifications can enhance job prospects, with employment growth expected to be steady over the coming years.

Will AI replace system analyst?

AI is unlikely to fully replace Java Systems Analysts, as their role involves understanding complex business requirements, designing solutions, and communicating with stakeholders. While AI tools can assist with data analysis and automation, analysts' skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and system design remain essential. Continuous learning and adapting to new technologies are important for analysts to stay relevant in an evolving tech environment.

Is SOC analyst a high paying job?

A SOC analyst typically earns a competitive salary, especially with experience and relevant certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP. Salaries vary by location and organization but are generally above average for cybersecurity roles, reflecting the importance of monitoring and responding to security threats.

What does a Java Systems Analyst do?

A Java Systems Analyst is responsible for analyzing, designing, and implementing information systems that use Java technologies. They bridge the gap between business requirements and technical solutions by assessing system needs, developing specifications, and coordinating with developers to create or modify Java-based applications. Their duties often involve troubleshooting issues, optimizing system performance, and ensuring software meets business goals. They may also be involved in testing, documentation, and providing technical support to users.

Job description

The Advanced Concepts & Technologies Group is looking for exceptional engineers, scientists, and mathematicians who are excited to work on challenging problems and join our team. The group develops technology to protect and enhance the effectiveness of our deployed sailors, soldiers, and assets while enabling operations in a rapidly evolving complex threat environment. The group's research and development activities include architecture and concept design, advanced algorithms development, software and hardware prototyping, experimental field-testing, and data analysis. Our team focuses on creating new capabilities through analysis of critical problems leading to rapid prototyping of software and hardware. Of particular interest to the group is the development of concepts to address key national problems through advanced electronic warfare systems prototypes, advanced sensors prototypes, novel signal processing techniques, mathematical optimization approaches, and artificial intelligence to enable the development of next generation systems for fleet and surface assets.

Due to the wide-ranging nature of research, this dynamic group is comprised of a team of scientists and engineers with expertise in physics, mathematics, computer science, and various engineering backgrounds. The group values inclusiveness, fosters mentoring at all levels, and promotes critical and innovative thinking to address the needs of the nation. The successful candidate will be part of a highly collaborative team that thrives in solving complex challenges, fosters innovation, supports career growth, and is dedicated to making a positive impact for our nation.

Job Description

The Advanced Concepts and Technologies Group works throughout the technology development cycle including the development of architectures, concepts, algorithms, software, and hardware prototypes. The group is seeking a systems analyst to join our team, understand our key missions, and perform analyses on architectures and concepts needed to solve hard problems in the National Security space. The candidate will work as part of a team to scope the analysis problem and develop physics- and engineering-based models for a wide variety of technologies related to sensors, electronic warfare systems, space systems, and crewed/uncrewed platforms. Leveraging these models and their strong technical background, the candidate will develop analyses of these systems and missions and technical briefings to convey the overall conclusions to government sponsors and other technical experts, at a variety of levels of detail, depending on the audience. While previous experience in these systems isn't required, the successful candidate must be able to leverage their technical background to rapidly develop understanding across these technology areas as they learn from, and collaborate with, experts across the group and the Laboratory. In addition, to be successful in the role, the candidate will need to develop and deliver clear, concise, compelling briefings to place technical results in context and explain them to a wide range of audiences.  Over time, it is anticipated the candidate will take a leadership role within the analysis team, in scoping and developing studies, as well as developing deep technical expertise in particular systems and mission areas.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Understand analysis problems and determine needed features and capabilities in models and analysis tools, including the technical background to accurately model basic physics phenomenology and determine whether the tools and models are performing as expected
  • Work with the team to scope the analysis problem, understand what new models and tools are required to support analysis, develop these models, and interpret the results
  • Along with the rest of the team, implement overall software architecture and quality control of the codebase, including how new models, tools, and features should developed and tested
  • Scope analysis to determine required modeling and develop and leverage tools that allow for efficient batch processing and analysis of results, as well as exploration and interpretation of results.  Based on results, determine next steps and further analysis required.
  • Develop clear, compelling briefings based on analysis and present results to both internal and external/sponsor audiences

Education / Qualifications:

Ph.D. (or bachelor's/master's degree with at least 4-6 years of experience) in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Aeronautics/Astronautics, or related field; significant programming skills in any language (MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++, Java, etc.) and ability to solve complex problems. Self-motivated with a proven ability to address a broad range of problems both independently and collaboratively with highly dynamic, interdisciplinary teams.  Proven ability to rapidly develop expertise in new areas.
