Job description

Hennepin Healthcares Jail Health Services, supported within the Division of General Internal Medicine, has a full-time leadership opportunity for an Internal Medicine/Family Medicine-trained Physician to serve as Medical Director for Jail Health Services at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center.  Hours are primarily daytime/weekday but also include periodic remote on-call duties during night and weekend shifts. The position is 0.5 FTE administrative and 0.5 FTE clinical, with flexibility in that ratio. The Medical Director works closely with the Hennepin County Sheriffs Office and clinical staff to ensure compassionate, high-quality care is delivered to patients at the jail.

The Medical Director of Jail Health Services (JHS) is a clinical operations and personnel leader responsible for providing operational support and medical direction. The Medical Director serves as a medical resource for the formulation of clinical policies and procedures, maximization of operational effectiveness, promotion of fiscal accountability and as a liaison between health system administration, the Hennepin County Sheriffs Office, and the clinical care staff.  

The Medical Director of JHS works closely with the Jail Health Services Director and Nurse Manager to assure high quality, safe, timely and patient-centered care in compliance with all applicable regulatory and institutional policies.  The Medical Director reports to the Division Director for General Internal Medicine and is supported by Jail Associate Medical Directors and Divisional administrative staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing, maintaining and implementing policies and procedures, in collaboration with Associate Medical Directors, Nursing Leadership and Dyad as appropriate, to support the delivery of high-quality care and service 
  • Promoting medical staff satisfaction and engagement; overseeing, supporting clinical performance, and coaching as needed, of staff in medical specialties 
  • Overseeing operations, in partnership with nursing leadership, of jail medical services  
  • Providing medical care and supporting coordination of care for the most medically complex patients at the jail 
  • Conducting mortality reviews regarding all patient deaths if not directly involved in clinical care in consultation with Hennepin County Attorneys and in collaboration with JHS nursing and HCSO leadership 
  • Consulting with Hennepin County Attorney's Office for legal proceedings, changes in statutes and other legal and regulatory issues as appropriate? 
  • Ensuring patient safety and quality of care through compliance with regulatory accreditation agencies including Department of Corrections (DOC/2911 Rules)1 and American Correctional Association (ACA)2, Hennepin Health Services (HHS) guidelines and in consultation with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) recommendations3 

  Minimum Qualifications

  • Current License to practice Medicine in the State of Minnesota (or eligibility for)?
  • BC/BE in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
    • If Board Eligible, must be Board Certified within 4 years of completing training?
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience
