What is an IT contractor?

IT contractors are professionals who provide information technology services to businesses or organizations on a contract or project basis, rather than as permanent employees. They may specialize in areas such as software development, network administration, cybersecurity, or IT support. Contractors are typically hired for their specialized skills to complete specific projects, fill short-term staffing needs, or offer expert advice. Their contracts can range from a few weeks to several months or years, depending on the needs of the client. IT contractors often work through their own limited companies or as part of an agency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Contractor, you need strong technical expertise in your chosen field (such as networking, software development, or cybersecurity), typically backed by a relevant degree and industry certifications. Familiarity with project management tools, cloud platforms, and common software development environments or IT frameworks is often required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills distinguish top performers in this role. These capabilities are crucial for delivering high-quality solutions on tight timelines and adapting quickly to client needs in a dynamic, project-based environment.

What are some common challenges faced by IT contractors when joining a new client project, and how can they be addressed?

IT contractors often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar technologies, quickly understanding the client's existing systems, and integrating with established teams. To overcome these, contractors should proactively communicate with team members, ask clarifying questions early on, and utilize any available documentation or onboarding resources. Building strong relationships and maintaining flexibility can also help contractors navigate organizational differences and deliver value efficiently.

Job description

IT Specialist
Givelify is a fintech-for-good company where brilliant minds come to power the most loved and trusted online and mobile giving app platform. Thanks to over 2 million generous donors, we've helped more than 80,000 nonprofits and places of worship raise over $7.5 billion. Together, they're changing their world with kindness and generosity.
Inc. 5000, the Stevies® Awards, Gartner, Forbes, and many more have recognized our story, innovations, and achievements. Our award-winning team builds products and experiences that put more good into the world. We love to take on big challenges because we know our work matters.
Make an impact at one of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. Be part of a talented team of big-hearted individuals, earning competitive pay with excellent benefits.
About your role:
You're the front door to IT at Givelify. When a teammate's laptop won't cooperate or a new hire needs to be set up, you're the first responder - triaging tickets, fixing the common stuff fast, and escalating the rest. It's hands-on, high-impact, and the launchpad for a career in IT.
Your team:
You'll join the IT & Systems team - the crew that keeps every Givelify team member equipped and unblocked. You'll work alongside senior specialists and systems engineers, collaborate across departments, and report to the Head of IT.
The IT Specialist will get to:
  • Own Level 1 ticket resolution - the output that keeps the company running: fast, friendly, first-touch support.
  • Triage incoming tickets, resolve common issues, and escalate what needs a deeper hand.
  • Procure, provision (zero-touch where possible), and retire devices across their lifecycle.
  • Create accounts and manage basic access under defined runbooks.
  • Set up new hires and contractors on standard tools so day one just works.

To be successful in this role, you'll also:
  • Live in the ticketing/IT Service Management system - log accurately, keep SLAs in view.
  • Learn our MDM and inventory tools; keep device records clean.
  • Follow playbooks and flag the gaps so we can fix them.
  • Communicate clearly and patiently with every end user.
  • Travel periodically to the office and globally as needed.
  • Handle hardware as needed on-site/off-site - including lifting and moving equipment up to 50 lbs and shipping/receiving equipment.

Your experience:
  • 0-1 year in help desk, IT support, or an IT internship.
  • Working knowledge of macOS, Microsoft SharePoint or Google Workspace, and a ticketing tool.
  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field required.

Your superpowers:
  • Dependable - you finish what you start and ask for help before it's late.
  • Empathy for people, not just tickets - you care about improving how your teammates experience technology at work.
  • A translator - you explain tech to non-tech people without the jargon.
  • Humble - you take feedback and run with it.
  • Proactive - you self-unblock and ask sharp questions.

Our culture:
We are a virtual team of award-winning and high-performing professionals who innovate and collaborate to fulfill our mission to instantly connect people to causes that matter most to them so they can change their world with kindness and generosity. Our four keys to success - integrity, heart, simplicity, and wow - fuel our passion to be recognized among the tech industry's most inclusive and purpose-driven workplaces.
We are steadfast in our conviction to overcome challenges while performing meaningful work alongside some of the most brilliant minds and biggest hearts. It propels our growth as individuals and as a team. We are committed to respecting each other in our workplace, firmly believing diversity is our strength.
At the heart of everything we do are our giving community, our donors and our partner organizations. We lean on research and human-centered design to consistently push the envelope and innovate our products and customer experiences.
We take great pride in providing competitive pay, full benefits to help care for you today and in the future, amazing perks (including flexible PTO), and, most importantly, the opportunity to put passion and purpose front and center.
