What is an IT architect?

IT Architects are professionals who design and oversee the implementation of complex information technology systems for organizations. They develop architecture frameworks, set technical standards, and ensure that IT solutions align with business goals. IT Architects often collaborate with various stakeholders to analyze requirements, select appropriate technologies, and create scalable, secure, and efficient systems. Their work helps organizations optimize IT resources and maintain a competitive edge in their industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT architect?

To thrive as an IT Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, enterprise architecture frameworks, and a strong background in IT infrastructure or software engineering—typically supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications such as TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect. Familiarity with cloud platforms, virtualization technologies, and architectural modeling tools is often required. Analytical thinking, strong communication, and stakeholder management are crucial soft skills for translating business requirements into technical solutions. These skills ensure robust, scalable IT environments that align with organizational goals and support digital transformation.

How does an IT architect typically collaborate with development and operations teams during large-scale projects?

IT Architects play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between technical and business teams. During large-scale projects, they work closely with development teams to ensure that the technical designs align with business requirements and with operations teams to guarantee the proposed solutions are maintainable and scalable. Regular meetings, design reviews, and documentation are common collaborative tools. This cross-functional communication helps to identify potential issues early and ensures a smooth project delivery.

What is the difference between It Architect vs Network Engineer?

AspectIt ArchitectNetwork Engineer
CredentialsCertifications like TOGAF, CISSP, PMPCertifications like CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning enterprise IT infrastructure, overseeing projectsImplementing and maintaining network systems
Employer & IndustryIT consulting firms, large corporationsTelecom, IT service providers, large enterprises

While both roles involve IT infrastructure, an It Architect focuses on designing overall IT strategies and architecture, whereas a Network Engineer implements and manages network systems. The roles often collaborate but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How do I become an IT architect?

To become an IT architect, you typically need a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, along with several years of experience in IT roles such as systems analyst or network administrator. Developing expertise in enterprise architecture frameworks, cloud computing, and security, as well as obtaining certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect, can enhance your qualifications. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to design complex IT systems are essential for this role.

What level of job is an IT architect?

An IT architect is a senior-level professional responsible for designing and overseeing complex IT systems and infrastructure. They typically have extensive experience, often 5 or more years in IT, and hold certifications such as TOGAF or cloud architecture credentials. Their role involves strategic planning, technical leadership, and collaboration with stakeholders.

Job description

Overview

Intelligent Waves is seeking an experienced, senior-level IT engineer to serve as the lead technical authority for the program. This is explicitly a senior engineering role: candidates are evaluated on hands-on architecture and engineering experience, not on whether a prior job title included the word "Architect." Working directly with the IT Program Manager, this person will drive the architecture, design, integration, and execution of complex engineering initiatives, translating mission and operational requirements into scalable, secure, and effective technical solutions while guiding the engineering team through successful implementation.

The role requires a strong problem solver who can make sound technical decisions, lead cross-functional engineering activities, and deliver high-quality results in a fast-paced, mission-focused environment.

Please note: This position is pending contract approval.

Location: Eglin AFB, FLTravel: 25% - travel is expected for contingency and surge operations. Reimbursed based on GSA Per Diem rates and DoD Joint Travel Regulations (JTR).Clearance Requirement: Secret
