About the Role

We are looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Tax Resolution Specialist to join our team. In this role you will be the firmโ€™s dedicated point of contact for managing IRS and state tax notices on behalf of our clients. You will work closely with CPAs, tax managers, and the administrative team to ensure all notices are handled accurately, promptly, and in full compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.

This is a senior role that requires a licensed Enrolled Agent (EA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with hands-on experience resolving complex federal and state tax notices, IRS audits, collections, and tax debt issues. You must be comfortable working independently, managing multiple high-stakes cases, and communicating directly with the IRS and state tax authorities on behalf of clients.

Key Responsibilities

โ€ข Receive, log, and track all incoming IRS and state tax notices across the firmโ€™s client base

โ€ข Review and assess each notice to determine the nature of the issue and required action

โ€ข Research applicable tax laws, regulations, and IRS guidance to determine the appropriate resolution strategy

โ€ข Prepare written responses and correspondence to the IRS and state tax authorities on behalf of clients

โ€ข Prepare and submit Power of Attorney forms (Form 2848) where required

โ€ข Communicate with clients regarding notice details, required actions, and resolution status in a clear and professional manner

โ€ข Coordinate with CPAs and tax managers to resolve complex or escalated notice matters

โ€ข Monitor notice deadlines and ensure timely responses to avoid penalties or further IRS action

โ€ข Track the status of all open notice cases from receipt through to resolution

โ€ข Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in Karbon and client files

โ€ข Assist with IRS audit representation matters as directed by management

โ€ข Identify patterns in notices and flag potential systemic issues to management

โ€ข Handle complex multi-year IRS audit representation and appeals Negotiate instalment agreements, offers in compromise, and penalty abatement requests Manage collections cases including liens, levies, and IRS revenue officer interactions Support the wider tax team with related administrative and compliance tasks as needed

What We Are Looking For

Essential:

โ€ข Minimum 5+ years of experience in tax resolution, IRS representation, or tax controversy in a CPA firm, EA practice, or tax resolution firm

โ€ข Advanced working knowledge of complex IRS notice types including CP2000, CP2501, CP504, LT11, Tax Court petitions, audit reconsiderations, offer in compromise, penalty abatement, innocent spouse relief, and instalment agreements

โ€ข Familiarity with the IRS Taxpayer Bill of Rights and standard IRS correspondence processes

โ€ข Extensive experience preparing Form 2848, calling IRS practitioner priority lines, and negotiating directly with IRS revenue officers and agents

โ€ข Excellent written communication skills โ€” ability to draft clear, professional correspondence

โ€ข Strong attention to detail and highly organised with the ability to manage multiple open cases simultaneously

โ€ข Proficiency with tax software (Lacerte preferred) and practice management systems (Karbon preferred)

โ€ข Ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines

Advantageous:

โ€ข Experience with both federal and multi-state tax notice resolution

โ€ข Active Enrolled Agent (EA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licence โ€” required, not optional

โ€ข Familiarity with IRS transcript analysis and tax account resolution strategies

โ€ข Proven experience with complex resolution strategies including Offer in Compromise, Currently Not Collectible status, innocent spouse relief, audit reconsideration, and tax court procedures

โ€ข Knowledge of audit representation procedures
