Description
The Baltimore Sun is seeking investigative journalists to join our digital-forward accountability team. In this role, you'll produce original accountability reporting that examines how decisions are made, where oversight breaks down, and what the public needs to know to make informed decisions. This role is for journalists who are unafraid to question authority and pursue the facts.
Essential Functions
  • Identify and dig into complex issues that impact the public by cultivating sources, reviewing public records, and pursuing leads.
  • Connect the dots across public records, interviews, and reporting to uncover patterns, inconsistencies, and systemic breakdowns. Conduct thorough research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy, credibility, and reliability in all investigative reporting.
  • Produce engaging investigative stories across multiple platforms, including digital, social, and print.
  • Spot gaps in coverage and propose new investigations that are in the public's interest.
  • Use digital tools creatively to support reporting and present findings.
  • Measure audience engagement and work with the audience team to grow readership.
  • Collaborate with visuals, data, and audience teams to enhance stories and maximize impact. Participate in production videos and live streaming with the visuals department, as appropriate.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of investigative reporting, preferably in daily journalism; editing experience a plus.
  • Willing to work irregular hours and holidays as needed.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $80,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors, including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
