About the Program
UPMC's Student Nurse Internship (SNI) program allows you to put what you learned in nursing school into practice by working side-by-side with a preceptor. This is a temporary 10-week paid opportunity during the Summer of 2027.
During the internship you will have the opportunity to:
โ€ข Work one-on-one with a trained preceptor to see a day in the life of a nurse at UPMC
โ€ข Participate in supplementary educational sessions to continue your learning journey
โ€ข Build your confidence as a future nurse
โ€ข Work at one hospital for the summer (*Assignment shared at time of offer)
โ€ข Shadow at least one additional area of nursing at your hospital placement
โ€ข Work up to 40 hours/week (*SNIs follow their preceptor's schedule; we understand obligations may not permit you to work a full-time schedule, we can accommodate!)
โ€ข Apply to system-wide Graduate Nurse opportunities at UPMC before you even leave the summer program
โ€ข Network with UPMC Nursing Leadership and receive mentorship
โ€ข Give back to the community
โ€ข Make an impact on patient care and Life Changing Medicine

Qualifications:
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Nursing Program (Diploma, Associates or BSN) with an expected graduation date of Fall 2027, Spring 2028 or Summer 2028 required
  • Attendance required at SNI Program Orientation (May 17-21 *schedule will vary by hospital) and End of Summer Event (Friday, July 23)
  • Availability to work throughout the summer with minimal absence required (school schedule flexibility can be accommodated)
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 strongly preferred
  • Preference will be given to students wanting to pursue a nursing career at UPMC

Licensure/Certifications
  • Active American Heart Association (AHA) OR American Red Cross BLS certification throughout the entire summer is required

*SNIs must bring current AHA CPR certification to orientation
*All cards should specify that the course is for healthcare workers, professional rescuers, or is a BLS course. Community and First Aide cards cannot be accepted.
  • Additional clearances may be required based on location and specialty

*Specific instructions will be provided during the onboarding process
