YMCA Community Impact Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston that seeks to meet the needs of Houston's communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. As a TPAP Advocate on our team, you will play an essential role in providing intensive emotional support, advocacy, and case management for survivors so they may be diverted from trafficking and exploitation and improve their chances of recovery.
This internship was made possible through a grant from the Simmons Foundation. The internship will take place in Greater Houston area.
Intern Job Description:
Since its inception in 2003, the YMCA's Trafficked Persons Assisted Program has assisted more than 600 survivors of human trafficking regain their lives. We serve survivors of both labor and sex trafficking, foreign nationals and U.S. citizens, of any gender, religion, disability, or cultural background. To help survivors heal from their horrific experiences and to get justice for the crimes committed against them, we work within a multi-disciplinary task force format consisting of federal, state, and local law enforcement, as well as non-profit, faith-based, and social service organizations to ensure survivors receive a wide array of restorative services.
Through this internship, the student will be trained in and/or exposed to the following:
  • Modern-day slavery - its definitions, scope, and impact on victims of trafficking

  • How to successfully work within a multi-disciplinary task force

  • Navigating and resource allocation

  • Quality control of case management files and data entry

  • Accurately collecting, capturing, and distributing donations as in-kind match

  • Networking and relationship building with volunteers, staff and clients

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-ethnic context

  • Explore a potential career in social services relations

  • Complete additional trainings as identified by supervisor. Motivational Interviewing, Crime Victims Compensation Training, Mandatory Reporting training, Trauma Informed Care Training, and any other trainings identified by supervisor.

  1. Internship must take place during our office hours of Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm, including evening and weekends when needed

Qualifications:
  • Intern must be enrolled in an undergraduate or post-graduate program in a relevant field at an accredited university or college. Juniors, seniors, and graduate students preferred.

  • Intern must have a school requirement to complete an internship and be able to commit to a minimum of 500 hours

  • Has some knowledge of the non-profit sector.

  • Is dependable, self-motivating, uses time effectively, has high energy and enthusiasm, and is a creative thinker in handling new tasks.

  • Possess some knowledge of root causes of human trafficking and victims of crime

  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Portuguese is a benefit, not a requirement.

Compensation
  • This position provides a stipend of $12,836, approximately. 500-600+ hours, depending on the program requirement .The stipend will be paid once the internship requirements are fulfilled successfully. The stipend will be paid upon the successful fulfillment of all internship requirements.
