Job description

Description

This is an unpaid internship opportunity located in Massachusetts and is open to students based in Massachusetts. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter to be considered for the position.

FamilyAid is a leading provider of solutions to family homelessness. Our mission is to empower parents and caregivers facing homelessness to secure and sustain housing and build solid foundations for their children's futures.

We prevent family homelessness whenever possible, reduce harm if homelessness can't be avoided by housing families as quickly as possible, mitigate trauma, especially for children, and provide wraparound supports that foster long-term stability.

We provide children and parents with a path to self-sufficiency via two-generation educational programs, housing search and placement support, and connections to vital resources they need to return to their own homes.

Our strategic vision and bold strategies to reduce two-generation homelessness successfully served 5,000 children and parents in Greater Boston last year.

Our supportive, collaborative, diverse workplace of more than 130 professionals is ideal for skilled, result-oriented professionals who are driven to help children and families thrive. FamilyAid has been recognized as a Massachusetts Top Workplace by The Boston Globe and by Charity Navigator as one of the nation's top organizations working to end homelessness.

Position Summary

This internship supports FamilyAid's two-generation (2Gen) programming, a model developed by the Aspen Institute that focuses on holistic, two-generation solutions for families experiencing homelessness. Serving as an on-site partner liaison at one of FamilyAid's congregate family shelter sites (West Newton or Brookline), the intern will facilitate collaboration between shelter staff, 2Gen Navigators, and community partners to ensure programming is effectively implemented and meets the needs of families. Responsibilities include community engagement, volunteer coordination, and operational support for planned initiatives. This position is ideal for students interested in macro social work, program development, and building the community partnerships that strengthen services for families.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Community Partnership & Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with community partners, coordinate partner visits and programming on-site, and serve as a liaison between shelter staff, 2Gen Navigators, and external organizations to ensure services are accessible and well-coordinated for families
  • Volunteer Management: Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers participating in programming at the shelter site; ensure volunteers are oriented, scheduled, and effectively integrated into planned activities
  • Program Coordination & Operations: Provide operational support for the planning and execution of 2Gen programming initiatives; assist with logistics, materials preparation, scheduling, and communication across teams
  • Family Engagement: Support efforts to engage families in available programming and community resources; assist in communicating opportunities to residents in a welcoming, accessible manner
  • Resource Development: Assist with identifying and cultivating new community partners and resources that align with the needs of families at the site
  • Documentation & Reporting: Track programming activities, volunteer engagement, and partnership outcomes; assist with reporting and internal documentation as needed
  • Team Participation: Attend and actively participate in shelter team meetings and 2Gen Navigator team meetings as scheduled

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate educational program, ideally in social work (macro), nonprofit management, public health, public policy, or a related field
  • Highly desired:
  • Fluency in another language (ideally Spanish or Haitian Creole)
  • Experience in community organizing, volunteer coordination, partnership development, or program support
  • Familiarity with two-generation approaches to family services and/or family homelessness
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Exhibits humility through the learning process and can accept feedback
  • Familiar with evidence-based practices such as trauma-informed care and motivational interviewing
  • Comfortable working primarily in person with flexibility for some virtual work as agreed upon with supervisor
  • Flexibility and compassion are essential

Location and Work Conditions:   This position is primarily in-person at one of FamilyAid's congregate shelter sites (West Newton or Brookline site). Possibility of some virtual work as agreed upon by the supervisor. FamilyAid's headquarters are at 3815 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02130.

Work Schedule: Ideally seeking 15-25 hours per week; flexible based on school requirements and to be discussed with supervisor and field education director. Days and hours to be determined with flexibility to best meet program needs.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please send a resume and a cover letter
