Job description

Job Overview:
The Controls Engineer position serves as a technical resource to both skilled trades and production departments. The controls engineer is a support function that addresses open issues on new and existing equipment, developing and implementing continuous improvement projects designed to achieve key performance Indicators (KPIs) and addressing daily performance issues. This position serves as a 2nd level emergency support to the emergency maintenance team for unplanned operation equipment stoppages and out-of-process conditions. This position participates in a cross-functional team to resolve highly technical equipment failures. Controls Engineers also work closely with equipment and robot logic to maintain production throughput of Detroit Engines and Axles.
Core Functions - 100 mile view:

  • Working directly in the technical services team (TT/ODS) primarily supporting M1 Detroit Trans-Axles Assembly and Gearset Machining Business Units
  • Direct production line support of controls logic, PLC and NC programming in Siemens based hardware platform (70%)
  • Continuous process and machine improvement (10%)
  • Daily performance reporting of equipment wellness for current emergency and/or planned/project maintenance from a controls perspective (10%)
  • Controls related document management (5%)
  • Shop Floor Management participation and support (5%)
Additional Functions/Duties:
  • Direct interaction, support and collaboration with skilled trades maintenance, maintenance team members and production team members
  • Weekend, holiday, and vacation coverage for fellow Controls Engineers across all operational business units in manufacturing
  • Interaction and support with original equipment manufacturers and material component vendors
Skills:
  • Main focus is manufacturing shop floor support to the Detroit Trans-axle production departments
  • Troubleshoot, implement, and support hardware and software for PLC, CNC, HMI, and Robot controls (Siemens S7-300, S7-1500, Siemens NC Powerline/Solutionline).
  • Troubleshoot, implement, and support device level networks (ProfibProfinet).
  • Troubleshoot, implement, and support servo and variable frequency drive hardware and software(Siemens Hardware).
  • Assist skilled trades in machine stop/fault recovery diagnosis and repair
  • Implement and support manufacturing monitoring systems with emphasis on interfacing to higher level systems.
  • Apply controls technology to new and existing processes to provide optimal manufacturing solutions.
  • Program robot positional points and robot control sequences (Kuka/Fanuc)
  • Provide controls technical assistance and support to manufacturing operations.
  • Participate in teams and cross-functional groups.
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related discipline required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in controls engineering or industrial automation (internship experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of CAD software and Microsoft Office applications is a plus.
  • Knowledge in manufacturing equipment hardware and software design practices & standards (i.e. PLCs, NCs, HMI s, servo systems, safety, etc.)
  • Proficient with PC hardware and commercially available software (i.e. Windows, etc.)
  • Knowledge of networks & database operation
  • Knowledge of Siemens PLCs, drives, servos and software
  • Knowledge of Allen Bradley PLCs, drives, servos and software
  • Robot Programming (Fanuc/Kuka) and Vision systems (Cognex)
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience in AutoCAD or equivalent application
  • Experience in multilayer reporting and proficiency in verbal and written communication
